Sunshine Ponies & Frizz
« on: August 12, 2014, 05:26:10 PM »
I saw an older post about the frizz being a chemical process that damaged the hair and that it can be sensitive to flat ironing. I wasn't able to reply to it since it's from a year ago so I'm starting a new thread.

What I'm wondering is if you can use the boiling water method? If you can use it to help straiten the hair does anyone know if it damages the color-changing feature of the parts of the hair that aren't damaged?

For some reason the color changing hair is super prone to frizz.  It's like that type of hair breaks down over time. I've found that, even on ponies with perfect regular hair,  the color change stripe is often frizzy.  I've never tried boiling it as I've been afraid to mess up the color change properties.  Deep condition has helped but doesn't cure it.  I'll be interested to see what treatments people have had good luck with.

I've seen somebody use a clothes iron on one; the hair was fine, but I'm not sure if it still works.

I'd use regular defrizz methods on a pony whose hair no longer changes, but for one that still works... I don't know. Test a bait?
Here's my ACNH creator code. I thought I might share it, since I have quite a few pony designs.

You can and I have known people to use all the normal defrizzing techniques on this kind of hair. But if you give any of them a go just do it in the knowledge its a combination of luck, practice and timing to get it right unfortunately. The hair will melt under much much lower temperatures and the frizziness is caused by the hair actually breaking down over time (basically its changed colour so many times its finished).  Its so easy to not just make it worse but actually melt the strands together. In addition using any heat on it will more often than not remove any colour changing properties.

If you decide to do some options try things like hot water dips or ironing the wet hair with a clothes iron through a pillow case. Neither will cure but they may help a little.

Someday I'm just going to rehair the strand with normal hair so it all looks nice.

I think maybe if they are kept in a dark place it can probably prevent it, but even just the natural day/night cycle in a room/store is enough to give them the frizz.  I've seen MOC Sunshine ponies on eBay and to me, many of them look like the color change streak is crunchy and the few that I've seen in person definitely look that way, though I haven't opened them to feel it LOL.  It stinks that for whatever reason that type of hair is prone to frizz.  At least it seems like there are ways to help restore it a bit though.

*nods in agreement* I had a TAF Sunshine MIB whose stripe was pretty much already wrecked - the box was heavily faded and the pink in her hair was all gone as well but it does show that just over exposure will cause as many problems as a loose one can experience.

I chopped my childhood Shoreline's hair when it got frizzy. Oh the regret.... Anyway, these two I think I'm just going to let well enough alone since they really aren't all that bad and I don't want to ruin it since the hair is so sensitive. Sea Flower's tail might just get curled to hide that frizz-ball.
