Restoration questions (Removezit and symbol repaints!)
« on: July 23, 2014, 06:02:27 PM »
Hi guys! I have a very... Er.. Loved girl, who's perhaps been loved a little too hard over the years.

This is Magic Hat. She had more of her symbol when I first received her, but it washed away with soap and water! OAO!
I have never seen paint so easily wiped away!

Anyway, I'd really like to see this girl looking a little better because I simply adore her and think she deserves some new life.

She's a creamy colour, not quite as yellow as she looks in the picture but she could definitely be whiter.
I'm considering buying that Removezit product to help whiten her---Does that stuff really work? For how long should I keep it on her? Should I be applying it and then letting her sit, or should I be scrubbing her with it?

Also: does anyone have any suggestions for her symbols? I want to repaint, but I'm afraid of botching the job, especially since her symbols are so intricate with those little animals coming out of her hat.
I think it's be pretty to just repaint the hat and glitter it with red glitter---But how do I go about sealing that?

Thanks for any advice!

Right now I swear by sunfading in a weak solution of water and hydrogen peroxide for two days to noticeably and dramatically whiten her. Say, 4 or five parts water, one part H2O2. I'm writing up an summary report on some baby glories I completed recently. WHITE. And no glitter damage.

Get a clear plastic or glass container. Submerge pony in solution, using a smaller clear glass to weight down the floaty pony. Cover with saran wrap to slow evaporation. For more uniform and efficient results place on a mirror and place in full sun. Rotate halfway once each day. But most important...

...take before and after pictures!

I do not understand sunfading---The entire reason why this pony is yellow is because she was left in the sun, or so ive been told by another member. Wouldn't more sun make her more yellow?

Also, will the peroxide damage her hair or her eyes? :) I think I will try it.

Definitely check out the MLP Preservation Project

I personally would recommend sunfading, with out without peroxide. You can see photos of my Daddy Apple Delight on the link above. I did not cut it down with water for him, but he was a bit worse than yellowed.

Her symbol is not paint - that's why it came off. Its actually a heat sensitive sticker. They are very easily damaged and most will come off if the pony gets wet unfortunately.

The yellowing is probably caused by an oily build up on her discolouring over the years. Sun fading should remove a lot of it; removezit may remove the yellowing now but in a couple of years she will discolour again I would never recommend using it on any kind of soft plastic. Magic eraser may also shift a lot of the surface problems.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi
