Yellowed Blueberry Baskets - Hydrogen Peroxide? Sunfading?
« on: July 14, 2014, 02:53:14 PM »
Hey everyone :)
I've got a Blueberry Baskets that I'm about to begin restoring. Problem is she has yellowed so much! I was just wondering if there's anything I can do to make her a little more blue again? I'm a huge fan of sunfading in general now since I've used it on so many ponies with great effect, but usually just on stains and ink ect. As her problem is that she has yellowed naturally, would sunfading work on her or make the problem worse? If not, what about hydrogen peroxide? Can you use hydrogen peroxide on coloured ponies? I've only ever seen it done on white ones.
Thank you so much :)

She looks amazing! How long did it take?

I've had blue and purple manes fade with peroxide but I've never tried it on blue bodies, would love to know if anyone has more information on this.

Wow, she looks amazing! Her colour is so different!
I have a Wind Whistler in very similar condition... Hmmmm.....  :lookround:
Might try Blueberry Baskets with sunfading first then. I suppose she can't get a lot worse than she is. I'll just monitor her closely.
I've not tried hydrogen peroxide myself yet. If the sunfading doesn't work, I might give it a go on Blueberry Baskets.

I've had blue and purple manes fade with peroxide but I've never tried it on blue bodies, would love to know if anyone has more information on this.
Thanks for the warning! The hair is what is worrying me and is the reason I've put off trying it. Though in Blueberry Baskets case I'm not sure what to do with her hair. It's frizzy but soft, though her tail has been cut. I'm waiting to see if I can get her body up first - then I will decide whether or not to rehair her.
If I do try peroxide on her (failing the sunfading), I will let you know if she fades or not.

I think it took a month or two, just in the UK.

I think I used oxyclean to get her insides clean first though.

I've never used HPO not convinced it's a good idea but no evidence to support this. I've never needed to use it.

Before and afters or it didn't happen  :P

 I know what you mean. I usually like to document before-and-after pictures too. Problem is I'm often too lazy to find the camera or set them up for pictures  :P
I prefer to use a more natural method on ponies wherever possible (hence the support for sunfading), but I wasn't sure in this case if it might make her worse or not.
I guess we'll find out!
I've got a few ponies baking in the window at the moment (wow, that sounds bad! ) - one thing I will say is there's a huge difference in time between now and over the winter. It took me months to get the marks out of my Glory over winter.

Sun fading should be enough.. I had to give a Baby Sunribbon a sunfade treatment and a repaint on eyes and symbol (they needed even before the sunfading!)

Before (note the photos are old and I had terrible lighting back then): http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l562/sd_dreamcrystal/Pony%20Photos/sunribboncomposit.jpg
After: http://sd-dreamcrystal.deviantart.com/art/MLP-Restore-Sunribbon-207554843 / http://sd-dreamcrystal.deviantart.com/art/MLP-Restore-2-Sunribbon-207555086

As far as Hydrogen Peroxide fading.. I've done that too with a Baby Moondancer

Before: http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l562/sd_dreamcrystal/Pony%20Photos/Baby%20Moondancer/babymoondanceroriginali.jpg
After: http://sd-dreamcrystal.deviantart.com/art/Custom-Restore-Baby-Moondancer-298281378 / http://sd-dreamcrystal.deviantart.com/art/MLP-Restore-Baby-Moondancer-white-298281418

Note: Baby Moondancer wasn't really discolored but she actually had cancer and the Peroxide lessened it... I look at her now and while the cancer spots returned they are not as bad as before!

I completely agree on the sun fading treatment. I actually used to be a sceptic on this but I know it works. As long as the yellowing is a surface stain - often caused by oil getting into the plastic pores and causing colour to change - it will work. Its only if its deeper in and the plastic itself changing colour that you will have a problem but thats a result of pigment problems, i.e. something like greying Seashell.

I actually really prefer the hydrogen peroxide sunfading better.  I swear by it.  You can actually sunfade SMOOZE out, it's that good.  I also like to be able to get a pony in and out.  The less sun I have to expose the pony to, the better for me.  A few days over a few months.  For some yellow dingy, your Blueberry Baskets would likely only need one good, sunny day in a 2 parts water and 1 part peroxide solution to get that out.  I can turn a deep yellow Honey Comb from that to bright white in two days.  I'm in Florida, though, so the extra sunlight could be part of the key.  Still, took me nearly three months on a badly yellowed Sugar Berry to get her even slightly white, and then I tried her in peroxide, and bam, she was white.

It can cause some ponies to harden, but those are going to be early ponies, generally, that are made with the most cancer-prone plastics.  Ponies like Gingerbread, Surprise, Quackers, etc.  I did manage to peroxide sunfade a BROWN Gingerbread to a cream color, which was a major improvement ( she's still bait, but I find the peroxide and water actually keeps the plastic from burning, which is what generally happens to Gingerbread when she is sunfaded ), but did cause her to harden.  I also did a German Starshine who went from having bad age spots and a lot of browning to bright white too, but she hardened some as well.  Besides those two ponies, I've had no hardening.  You will want to wrap up certain hair colors, like reds, deep greens and chartreuse( this is the worst color.  It bleeds SO BAD ).  When I did Starshine, because of her value, I did not sunfade her out of my sight.  If I wasn't home, she wasn't sunfading.  I checked her on the hour.  I had to wrap up her hair because her green hair was starting to stain her, which did sunfade right back out because I caught it so soon.

2 parts water.  1 part peroxide, as I said above.

Place pony and peroxide solution in a plastic container.  I use the plastic soup take out containers you get from some restaurants.  They're clear enough to let in sunlight.  Place in a sunny spot.  Keep an eye on it.  Very simple.

Be very careful with some hair colours in peroxide colours though. Any of the darker or neon shades can have issues with actually leaking colour and further staining the pony :)
