Can G1 "Pony Wear" harm your pony?
« on: July 04, 2014, 02:40:00 PM »
I'm probably being too ultra paranoid, but can the G1 Pony Wear harm your pony? The type of "harm" I'm taking about is staining and etc.

I know there was a thread recently about ponywear staining. Maybe Hathorcat can give a more definitive answer because I think she has her ponywear displayed on a small Sundance army, so if they stain it would show up. I know pink saddles definitely do stain. I tend not to leave my ponies in contact with anything else long term for this reason, If I had room to display ponywear in my home I would buy baits for the purpose, possibly with cancer as a way of giving a home to some baits.

Short Answer: Yes.

The longer version is more complicated.  Technically any two disparate, reactive materials put next to each other are likely to cause an interaction, be that dye bleeding, staining, material breakdown or otherwise.  Some materials like cotton tend to be very stable, while plastics generally are fair to highly unstable.  Dyes also vary considerably, even the same type may have different fastness depending on hue.
Ponywear isn't recommended for long term display on ponies that are of significant value, particularly those with neon, red or other bright/dark colors (either pony or clothing).  Environment also plays a huge role on how reactive various materials are, due to temperature and humidity.  The likelyhood of an interaction isn't high other than a few notorious pieces such as the plastic bridles/saddles, but why take the risk?

Pretty much what Baby Sugarberry said; yes there is unfortunately always the possibility that colour transference is going to happen from one dyed fabric/plastic to another. However, the chances of that happening increase/decrease depending on the colours, the material, how it was dyed, how stable the dye is, the condition its stored in and of course the material it is against.

In general the vast majority of "fabric" pony wear - or at least G1 pony wear - is fine. Its always good to be cautious over heavily dyed colours such as blacks and dark blues, dark greens, dark reds especially if they are felts or cottons. But most pony wear is light in colour or made of fabrics which are pretty colour fast. What I would advise against keeping on ponies, especially if they are ponies you would be upset about if they got stained, are plastics - such as saddles, bridles and the pony shoes. They will stain over time whereas most fabrics wont.

I have all pony wear all displayed on ponies. However the ponies they are displayed on are baity CP ponies, many of whom have pretty serious issues themselves and therefore any additional stains do not worry me. That being said most of the pony wear has been on ponies all the time for 2 to 8 years and none of them have caused any stains to develop. My Sundance wear is checked often and the shoes sit beside the pony not on the pony just in case - but again there has never been any colour transference from the clothes to the white ponies.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

Agreed with the above, I actually keep flawed ponies that would only be worth $2ish alone, that while they display nice in an outfit, they are already NOT collector quality, chewed feet, missing symbols etc. So, if a shoe, saddle or hat stains them (yes, anything can cause a reaction) they aren't any worse off.

Yeppers!  The shoes especially will leave marks, as do saddles and bridles. I have also had the newborn pony nighties leave a ring around the pony's neck from the elastic.
