Silverbeams Ball jointed Ponies
« on: June 18, 2014, 01:18:51 PM »
Sorry if this feels like a repeat thread, I wanted a thread to put all the info down on my ponies for people to discuss, post news, facts, pics, info, etc etc on my unique ponies. Please enjoy. :)

BALL JOINTED PONIES:

Created with the amazing technology of 3D printing I would like to share more with you on my ball jointed ponies.

Ball jointed dolls: Or asian ball jointed dolls have spread into the collectors hearts much like ponies have. Started in Japan by a company called VOLKS in 1999 with 100s of companies all over the world today. They come in a variety of sizes and feature the ball joint features which give the doll the ability to pose. they are also made to be highly customizable with  interchangeable eyes, wigs, and blank faces to truly create your own unique character. Go onto devintart and search for BJD for some awesome looking dolls. :)

3D Printing
: Its a manufacturing method to create items.  You create a digital 3D file then with special printers, lazers and awesome things that printer makes your digital file into a real life object by building layer upon layer. Discover more online, watch printers in action on youtube. I do not have my own printer yet, I use a company online called shapeways to create my stuffs. I do create all the digital 3D models or on the rare occasion get them online and edit them to be printable or fit my needs. It is expensive, it is volume based in costs, so cubic inch kinda thing, or think of a water pitcher and a glass..... Different materials are available and different printers have different quality or resolution in how thick or thin their printing layers are. the thinner they are the better the item printed looks. Kinda like how many dots per inch on a regular printer makes a better picture.

Silverbeam's Ball jointed ponies: these ponies are one of a kind, I know of no one else who makes a fully articulated pony like mine. They have ball joints as explained above so they can do a large variety of poses. Great for art reference, stop animation, display etc. these dolls are for gentle use and display purposes. They are slightly fragile, but they are more durable then they appear and feel. We recommend them for older collectors and are not suitable for small children.

The earth and unicorn ponies have 13 points of articulation while the pegasi and alicorns have 15 points of articulation with their wings. All are fully articulate, and the hooves point and pose. We have several different bases to customize.  A mane six type base in both male and female, then a adult base similar to celestia. The mane six type bases are about 4 inches tall (4.5 with unicorns) the adult or celestia type base is about 6 inches, a new tiny version will be about 3 inches.

3D printed in a nylon plastic, the ponies are quite a lot of fun. Because they are 3D printed they have some layering and texture effects. This material is really good for customizing though as you can sand, cut, drill, melt, bake (some one got one of the ponies and use polymer clay for their own hair and baked it. said it did fine, it did new cords for the inside though as they became loose), dye, paint (we recommend quality acrylics,) you can also use powder pastels and water colored pencils. The material is slightly porous so you may want to prime it first.

MYSELF: My  Online Name is Silverbeam. I graduated from the digital animation and visual effects school at universal studios orlando florida. I wasn't able to find work due to health problems,  and life's usual problems. I started my own etsy shop/business and got into 3D printing and ball jointed dolls in January, 2011.

Don't have pictures for every type, but all are available

A new version of the m6 female ponies are coming out. A smaller size that should be easier on the pocket and extremely cute. about 3inches or about as tall as the typical g4 ponies in the market.

A special frosted transparent material that is also available looks pretty spiffy but is slightly more fragile and of course much more pricey because ...yeah material costs.....

These are awesome!  One question though- could you root hair in them?

I've got 10 BJDs of my own. :) I'm pretty sure I've seen your ponies before too. Very cute! I like the Princess sculpt you've created.

They are fantastic, I'm amazed! :whoa:

I wonder what one could do with a completely original design... This might be an interesting alternative to resin casts.
