Pony modification questions - mostly acetone related
« on: June 15, 2014, 04:34:08 PM »
I just wanted to ask, since I'm preparing to do some paint removal from my fakies this spring: what materials should I have with me when I use acetone? I'm figuring I'll have a water source nearby (probably the hose, as I'll be outside) and lots of rags available. Is there anything else you guys tend to have around when you use acetone? Should I also wear gloves?

Also, is there an easy way to pierce a pony's ears?  I have a fakie I'd like to do this to.  Her plastic is a bit harder than that of a real MLP. (You know those teal ones with pink hair and a strawberry on their butt? That's the one.) It seems like her plastic would be too thick to just jam a pin into, even if I did warm her ears up first.

Thanks guys. :)
I'll put something here some time

Yes wear gloves!!! You'll need chemically resistant gloves---they are thicker than regular latex gloves. Water Rags are good :) You could also be OK with a mask just in case. (safety first!) Lots of cotton balls. A glass cup to pour acetone in.

Heat up a LOOONG needle or piece of wire (use pliers to hold it) with a lighter and quickly place it through the area you want to pierce.

Why would gloves be needed for acetone...? You use it to remove nail polish from your fingers! I get a good bit of it on my fingers in the process and have never had issue....

It's really not that harmful.  Most nail polish removers use acetone as a main ingredient, but it's not usually pure acetone.  At best, pure acetone will be a skin irritant and dry out your skin/nails.  And don't go inhaling too much of the stuff!

Fun fact:
Acetone will dissolve a styrofoam cup!

I recommend wearing gloves when handling acetone because in my experience it dries out my hands; as long as you have those and good ventilation you should be fine.

I've done pony piercing two or three times, but it's always been with a G1 so I can't give you any advice on how to pierce a G3. However, Aikarin has a lovely tutorial on piercings;

Best of luck with your custom!

I Wear Gloves because of this:

Potential Chronic Health Effects:
CARCINOGENIC EFFECTS: A4 (Not classifiable for human or animal.) by ACGIH. MUTAGENIC EFFECTS: Not available.
TERATOGENIC EFFECTS: Not available. DEVELOPMENTAL TOXICITY: Classified ****Reproductive system/toxin/female,
Reproductive system/toxin/male [SUSPECTED]. The substance is toxic to central nervous system (CNS). The substance may
be toxic to kidneys, the reproductive system, liver, skin. Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can produce target
organs damage."****

That is from the MSDS on Acetone. I use 100% acetone on my ponies and deflocks because it works the best and doesn't smear the paint around.

So yes, PLEASE wear gloves. It really can cause damage.
