Rehair Needles - Anyone make their own?
« on: June 12, 2014, 11:21:58 AM »
Just curious if anyone makes their own rehairing needles and has a good method that works for them.  I'm going to try my hand at it tonight and see how it goes.  *straps on the safety goggles*

It seems like I break and bend mine an awful lot.   :yikes:

I did make my own with a needle, hot glue for cushioning, and (I think) a small drill handle. It was the best I could do at the time and works well. If I can (and remember), I'll post a picture after I return home.

*Update (I hope the picture shows up - the tool fits in my palm)

I make my own because otherwise it gets quite expensive always having to order replacements.

I just buy a pack of needles, take them and use this tool my hubby has (combination pliers and wire cutters) and I just clip the end of the eye off the needle. I keep it pointed away from me (usually pointed into the garbage, or I stick a bit of clay to the end so it doesn't go flying), I do the same to the other end so it isn't too long.

Hopefully I explained that well enough :)

That's a great idea!  The rehair needles that I've bought off of dollyhair are pronged at an angle (one side longer than the other).  I assume that helps get the hair into the holes a little better.  I was thinking of putting a needle in a vice grip and taking a cutting wheel to the needle eye.  Coming in at an angle and cutting out a line.  I was concerned this might be a little overkill - I'm going to try your method first.   Thanks for the suggestion!

I make my own, I use pliers and snip on an angle, then I sand so no sharp edges, I also go thru many many many needles! My most is 12 on one g2!

Ouch, that's a lot on a single pony
I must admit I'm very bad at preserving my needles. I'm always breaking them  I know I went through at least 7 on a pony not too long ago.
I make my own too, using the same method as you Saja :)
I used to do them on my Dad's sanding belt, but I don't have access to it anymore and can't afford my own yet.

I made my own like MikeysGrrrl explained, with an Xacto knife handle as the base.  I also clip off about half the needle shaft so when I push the hair into the pony head, it doesn't go incredibly far into her head!  Somehow my needles seem to rarely break, I've gotten several ponies out of each one.  Mysterious!  Best of luck to you.  Just experiment until you create the needle that works for you :)
Thanks to Shimmlight for the new avatar image

I use beading wire- first I open the hole with a thumb tack, and when it's nice and stretched out, I fold the wire in half, stick it through the hole, load the hair inside, and pull it through. It's easy to go through many wires with this method though, and it tends to hurt my fingers. I have a friend who has been trying to get me to switch to her needle method, but I don't understand the way she does it. I've never seen her do it, so I literally have no idea how she gets it to work.

Stocking this post.  I've been wanting to try this.  I was leery of paying for one but am more likely to do this.

I make my own, but I have been known to buy them from BarbedDragon too, since she sands and files and makes them smooth like butter.  :)
