Customized Lego minifig!
« on: June 05, 2014, 10:53:21 PM »
Not pony, but definitely art. :) I think my first try at customizing a Lego minifigure turned out pretty well!

The default series 9 waiter already bears a striking resemblance to one of the characters played by my favorite local actor, but he needed a few little adjustments to complete the look. All I did was swap out his hands, change the color of his vest, and grey up his hair a bit. It wasn't much, but I'm very happy with the result!

Wanna know the best part? I posted that picture to the theatre's Facebook page before work this morning for Throwback Thursday, with the following comment:

"Any other Ghost Busted fans out there? I was amazed to find just how much the Lego series 9 waiter minifigure looked like a certain hotel manager. (Original waiter on the top left, customized on the top right.) A few tiny modifications later, my Lego city is now home to René Bouggaire! Though I think his ghost problem may have followed him..."

I arrived home after work to find this comment:

"I am zo proud to be immortalize in Lego. (Whatevah zat eez.)" R. Bouggaire.

FROM THE ACTOR!!! :dropjaw: :faint: :frolic:

Congrats, how amazing to get compliments from the actor himself! You did a great job, the expression is spot on! The eyebrows especially.

I didn't do a thing to the minifig's face. Didn't have to. XD I honestly didn't even notice they had the same expression when I posted the pic. I love it when things just work out like that! ^.^

I'm so happy that so many people like him! ^_^ I'd really like to make Bouggaire's counterpart too, but I'm not sure how just yet. Meet the Boggart. :devious: (Played by the same actor, incidentally.)

The face and body are no problem, but dat hair...:drunk: I can't find an existing Lego hair piece that I think looks right, but I might be able to sculpt one. Maybe. I'd love to hear any advise or ideas!

Great Scott!

My Google-fu failed me again. I swear I went looking for pics of  that exact minifig, but couldn't find one that looked good. That pic is pretty much exactly what I want, and that hair piece comes on other minifigs too. The Monster Hunter Vampire might be just that base I need...

To the Lego Store! :bolt:

I have since learned that the actor the figure was modeled after wasn't the only one who liked it. I also got a like from another actor at the same theatre (he's also a professional photographer!), and the wife of a third actor! Brilliant artists, every one of them. To think that artists of their caliber enjoy my work...it's priceless.

After careful consideration and a great deal of research, I have come to the conclusion that the Monster Fighter Vampire as a base is not the way to go. If I painted a torso I'd either scrape off the paint on its sides every time I moved the arms, or pose it once and never move it again. (Unleash the Kragle!) Not what I want to do at all. This amazing person and the equally amazing character deserve nothing less than my absolute best, and dangit they're going to get it!

The hair piece was simple. I found the Doc Brown figure at the Lego Store, but wasn't about to spend $45 on a Delorean set that I really didn't want just to get that hair. So I spent a little more at Discovery Hut on an older X Men set that has lots of stuff that I do want, and Magneto is going to "donate" his hair. :devious: I already have plenty of black legs and white hands to use, and a plain white head from a snowman that I don't really care about, but what to do about that torso? I was going to use a generic townsperson's red torso, but the Boggart's coat isn't red red. I need a wine red or burgundy.

This afternoon was spent browsing Bricklink with The Lego Movie playing in the background, and I discovered that I had the solution all along! I found a plain torso in the perfect color that only came with one minifigure...the series 8 Conquistador, which I already have. Everything is awesome, indeed.

Pics to follow.
