Deflocking help please?
« on: May 21, 2014, 09:07:59 AM »
Hi, I hope this is in the right area!

I have been deflocking a SS North Star, but I'm struggling. I used oxiaction to remove the flocking, then I used acetone based nail polish remover to try to remove the glue. It didn't work very well, so I tried adhesive remover. That wasn't great, so I tried white spirit, which again has not removed much of the residual glue. It's all yellowed and she looks really horrible now, and i wish I hadn't started.

I'm in the UK, so any advice on the products available here that people have had success with would be very greatly received!!

Sorry, just wanted to check, have I posted this in the wrong place? Should it go under customs?

No you are in the right forum :)

You could try to soak her over night in sugar soap - thats usually great at cutting through the glue and getting rid of it. The next step after that is paint stripper - the same kind you will get in any Wickes, B&Q or other hardware store. You do have to be careful with it - use only in a ventilated location, with gloves and ideally a mask/goggles. Also make sure to not leave it on the ponies body too long as it actually gets into the plastic pores and can make it a little pock marked.

Thank you so much for that, I'll try the less drastic means primarily, but I'll get some paint stripper in case! I was starting to think I'd ruined her for good,  but hopefully I'll see better results now :)

I used pure acetone, hot water and lots of scrubbing with the one I am working on. I just had to be super careful around the symbol.

^^This - pure acetone works much better than acetone based nail polish remover. Lots of elbow grease to scrub off the glue, being very careful around symbols. For over symbols, I go with rubbing alcohol + elbow grease to scrub scrub scrub. You can see a few of my deflocks in my restoration thread in my siggy - some are more work than others, but the end result is usually amazing!

Thank you so much! She's Looking pretty good now, if I do say so myself, I'm really pleased with the results. I've found it hard to get pure acetone in the hardware shops here, so I used the paint and varnish remover

Dont worry it takes some time to get used to. You just have copied over the wrong link from photobucket -  you simply want to copy paste the URL from the "image" box rather than from the "html" box :) Just copy it in PB and paste it in your thread and it will work; your link should have a .jpg at the end of it.

They don't sell pure acetone in the nail polish isles there? I just got mine next to the regular nail polish remover.
