Current pony values by generation???
« on: May 26, 2014, 12:29:38 PM »
 :lookround:

I just returned to collecting after a three year hiatus. I've been on eBay lately and am wondering about current vales by generation.  3 years ago, g1 were the main ponies collectors were after. G2 didn't seem to be worth much unless MIB or European. G3 were in the stores so not too expensive. Now it looks like G1s are less expensive and g4 are holding good value. Even G3 I see sellers asking double store price for loose ponies. What are current trends in value by generation?

I really don't look at pricing by generation. It's more of which pony and how popular that particular one is. I've seen some really cheap MOC G2s sell recently but for the exact ponies loose with their accessory went a lot higher.  I find some very cheap G3s except the Exclusive Fair ponies, those seem to hold value.
I guess it's peoples' personal collections and what there target is. I know for me, my G1 collection is almost complete so I'm currently searching for G2s to add (and they are hard to track down ;))

I agree with Unicorn Pops, its hard to state a rule/guide per generation as within each generation things are up and down depending on the set.

G1s still remain the most popular, sought after and typically the most expensive generation. G2 has in the last couple of years got more and more popular but I dont think thats done too dramatic things to their prices - while some of the harder to find ones and sought after ones may be more expensive most of them are not too bad and it remains probably the least popular of the first 3 gens and therefore not too expensive. You see a lot of over priced G3s on ebay; just because someone wants $20 for their MIB pony doesnt mean that they will get it after all. Other than some hard to finds - which have always been hard to finds - most G3s hover around $2-5 loose and a touch above retail MIB. As for G4 we are just seeing what we did with G3, where recently off the shelf ponies are expensive when everyone scarpers to try and find ponies which are no longer retail available. Give G4 a few years after the line is expired and most of them will all drop to the G3 values.

There are a lot of over prices ponies on ebay right now. But I would have to say that some G1 ponies can cost a lot. G3 and G2 ponies seem to be low on price right now. And G4 ponies are kind of hard to say cause they are so new and a lot are still in stores.

Thank you for the answers. I'm just asking because I just got a baby blue ribbon for 20 bucks. I don't think I could have three years ago; maybe I'm mistaken about that though. I don't know. I've got most of the G1 ponies and only need a few items to complete the store release ponies. Good info. Thx!

I think any pony can go up and down. 12-18 months ago you would not have got Oakly for less than $150, now he is back down to his normal $60-70 mark. 15 years ago Baby Hopscotch was running $200-250 on ebay now she is more like $40. Fashion Style Applejack was consistently about $250 a year ago, she has been slowly dropping since and will go even further down with her new release. It just all depends on circumstance, timing, the economy [as people have less money to spend now than they did 5 or 6 years ago], the pony - so many things which can make one pony get more expensive or less expensive for a brief period or for an extended period of time.
