Your own quirks when you buy dolls
« on: May 10, 2014, 12:02:44 AM »
Do you buy your toys/ponies/dolls following certain 'rules'? For example, I don't like buying my dolls directly from the toy shop (even if I visit them often XD), I prefer finding them in flea markets or second hand stores, but my first G4 ponies are from a toy shop because I didn't have those ides before. I prefer giving a new life to 'second-hand' toys, but if there is a new doll line I like, I buy one (and only one) directly from the toy shop, because they might disappear before they arrive to flea markets *cough cough*Novis*COUUUGH*
I know it is harder to find my favourite dolls with this 'method', but hey, it makes my finds more interesting :D

I am not a big doll collector but I've bought a lot (for me) in the last few months. I won't buy them at full price though. I'll wait until I have a really good coupon or until they're on clearance. I also prefer to buy them second hand but a lot of the ones I wanted have been discounted recently so I just kinda went for it.

If something is brand new - i.e. G4 or MH - then I will buy it straight from the shelf. I really dislike buying current releases via the internet and I begrudge even more the higher prices some of them sit at :P Unless its something I desperately want, if i cant track it down on shelves I ll simply pass it by :)

I'm just like you, Waterline! I also find myself much more attached to my lucky second hand-found dolls, and I prefer finding my wants (let it be not only dolls, but anything else I collect) this way. the unexpectedness and luck makes them more valuable for me. not to mention, most of the time they also cost less this way, which is another nice addition.
I seldom buy toys in stores for full prices, as I usually don't want to spend the ridiculous prices they go for in local shops on them. and then again, there's not much I am interested in that is currently available for sale on store shelves.

I really don't stick to any rules...maybe I should!  I do get excited when I find toys I want in second hand shops, but it doesn't happen very often, so my collection would be slim to none.  I guess I'd save a lot of money that way!

I only buy dolly things with doll money. Be it the money hubby and I split after bills and shopping are done or from sells of dolly things I have. I've been waiting a long time to order my next do but hopefully soon I can order her.

Novis and Pinkie Cooper were adorable yes.

(not my pic)

But these prices are the reason why they went out of business. I think the basic Pinkies are decently priced? But $25 for a rubbery tiny doll with limited articulation?
Yeah, this is why you can only find her at Tuesday Morning right now.

So similar to everyone else, I only buy Novis and Pinkies at under $20, I think my last two Novis were $7 at Walmart.
Pinkie was $10 clearanced at Target?
Actually clearance was the only reason I started collecting.

On the other hand when I buy Loopsies I buy them full priced(they usually aren't on sale) but I justify it because they tend to have nice paint jobs and a lot of tiny tiny details.

As for the actual purchasing, *coughcough* when I got my first Pinkie... London Pinkie, the Target employee asked if I wanted a gift receipt.
I poker faced and was like, Yes.. That would be nice.  :lookround:

My doll friend who was with me at the time was laughing till we got to the car.

Im a sucker for sales! I usually only shop for toys that are on clearance while all the new toys are just now getting onto the shelves. However I always check the Zelfs and Funkos at my TRU store for rares first before poking around! xD I usually buy MH dolls if they are marked down or on a GOOD sale! Like right now, $9.99 for Power Ghouls at Target! Need to go before they are gone! Also NoviStars at Walmart for $5. Yeah, pretty much anything I buy I try to use coupons or get during a sale :-) Im in love with TRU BOGO sales on ponies! The only exception is SDCC exclusives or ultra rares I spot in stores.

OMG and I LOVE LOVE LOOOVE discounted toys at places like TJ Maxx, Ross, Tuesday Morning, and im obsessed with toy thrifting! Its safe to call me a cheapo!

I usually have a good idea of what I'm going to buy in advance.  I make a mental list, look at owner pics and narrow down from there.  I'm not a set completer.  The doll has to feel different from all the other dolls I own.  If it's a doll I absolutely cannot wait to have, I'll pay full price.      I might consider other dolls if they're at a much lower than normal price.

My quirk is that I'm a random collector lol, there is a shop we go to that sells second hand comics, dvds, books action figures etc (and some brand new things like Simpsons Monopoly, star wars monopoly type games). Its a bit like a cross between the comic store in Big Bang Theory and a charity shop  :) I loves it.

I get any Wonder Woman figures there and have added Lara Croft to that. Some comics and random bits and bobs. It's great to get stuff from a random shop (they have dr who figures too but I refuse to start another collection).

I get my zelfs (don't have many) from the shop, my blind bags mostly from the shop.

My She Ra dolls are ebay/amazon and my MH and EAH are either Argos in person, TRU online or ebay/amazon online.

And of course I browse charity shops :) sometimes I start new collections by accident because I just think 'ooooooh i want that its awesome' and then i have three lol

I looooooooooove adopting pre-owned dolls that I find in the thrift shop or whatever.   Rescuing and adopting them and adding them to the doll family... so much fun!

I'm the opposite with my toys when I buy, I don't buy them unless they're in really good condition. Of course, if a toy I get in a thirft shop or flea market and it just needs a little TLC then I don't mind adding them to my collection.  :)
