Homemade Mod Podge - Has somebody tried this?
« on: May 24, 2014, 07:40:25 AM »
According to this webpage (http://www.ehowenespanol.com/haz-misma-pegamento-podge-decoupage-manera_122978/), you can make a homemade version of Mod Podge with white glue and water... has somebody used this idea for a pony? Will it look well? (going to try this with a fakie, but I'd like to hear some opinions before)

I've never tried it on a pony but I've sealed a book I made with it and it worked really well. Coating was matte, hard and non-sticky. But book covers were made of paper... The idea is good though! I think I'll try it on my one and only fakie too  :)

I wanted to tell you asap that I tried this white clue and water mixture on a pony today and it worked out really nicely! I tried it on a fakie first. I painted her in acrylics and when paint was dry I sealed it with the mixture. Mixture dried matte and non-sticky so I dared to put it on a custom too. I put two layers on and surface feels and looks really good! So I think you may try it as well if you already haven't  :)

Thanks a lot for the idea, by the way! This is a real life safer 'cause I don't have any pony funds right now but I do have clue! And water

Wow, I feel silly. I've used this method since I was a kid but never thought to use it on a pony! :P
Maybe because I've never seen Mod Podge so I didn't realise they had similar results.
Thanks so much for posting this, I'll definitely try it out!

[edit]
Wait... -_- I have used this on a pony before, my Christmas Ornament Pony. Well actually I used straight PVA and it gave her a really glossy finish, very sturdy!

Is there a site that has the instructions in English?

gemini_pony:

I don't know if there's instruction in English for this but here's what I did:

I mixed white clue that will dry clear (mine is ment for builders to clue mainly wood but it works well in pony purpose too) and water approx. 50/50. That's quite thin mixture so you may have to put on couple of layers but it will be more easier to apply and result will be smoother I think than if you'd use mixture that has more clue than water in it.

Then I mix them well together and take a brush to put first layer on. Every layer must be completely dry before you put on another 'cause otherwice it will get clumpy and horrible. How long it takes to dry depends on the clue you're using, I think it could be anything between 10 minutes to couple of hours.

This is  just how I do it but hopefully this still helped you a little  :)

CeciliaB's instructions are more or less the same than the webpage, but it recommend mixing well the water with the glue before adding more water. It should get the consistency of liquid paint. CeciliaB used glue for wood, but that glue meant for artisan crafts will work too. It also recommends keeping it in a jar, in a fresh and dark place.

Well, Mod Podge pretty much IS white glue/PVA, so I'd say the mixture is probably very similar to watered down Mod Podge.
