testors dullcote used on createx paint?
« on: April 27, 2014, 12:57:40 PM »
Hey guys, this is related to my last topic on the white FBR ponies becoming yellow over time and out of 4 to 5 of my ponies.. only 1 had the most discoloring in the oddest of ways (she is a G4 so she is the most recent white FBR)

First of all this pony was done in 2011.. which means the custom is only about 3 years old... while my other whites were done in '09 which  makes them approx. 5 years old and show the least amount of yellowing..

Secondly, this pony.. out of the 4 to 5 was the only white done with createx paint and given a testors dullcote seal with triple thick on the eyes only. The others were done with whatever white acrylics I had at the time.. mostly Reeves paint but some with craft white paint mixed it.. and those were sealed with Mod Podge or DecoArt's DuraClear.. The non-G4 ones have some yellowing but half the time I can't tell if it's dust or actual yellowing so it's not bad.. The G4 is partly exposed to the light in my room and only part of her is in shadows from other customs.. her face which is in the light has yellowed a bit but the areas that are in shadow (her legs on her right side and the inside of her legs on her left side) has also yellowed.. the parts of her body that hasn't yellowed are in light..

Thirdly... out of the 4 only the ponyville size fbr has not yellowed, was done in Reeve's white but I forgot what sealer... that pony is one of the 5 year old customs.. in fact I don't remember if I sealed her at all! On top of that, I do have some wips done with createx white that I know at least one or two of them hasn't been sealed, anyway the fakie dog that I know isn't sealed and is done in createx white but is not really a year old yet has not yellowed in the white areas...

Someone on FB mentioned it might have been the sealer.. if it was in fact the testors dullcote... then what am I going to do? I stopped using Mod Podge because it wasn't a true matte finish and if water sat on it too long it became tacky again for a short while and stuff would stick to it :(

but I'm still not sure it was the testors dullcote.. it might have been the createx.. but I'm not even sure how long it would take for that to yellow unsealed... I'm not sure if the 3 year old custom took 1 year or 2... it sure has heck didn't take 3 years...

Any ideas guys? This is confusing to me and I don't want it to happen to other white customs... Oh and no there are no smokers in the house so that isn't possibility..

Testors Dullcote is known to yellow. It's one of the reasons alot of BJD owners won't use it on their dolls. Mr Super Clear is another option and as far as I know doesn't yellow. It is more pricey than Dullcote though.

Ebay is the only place I know of to get it. Maybe someone else knows of another place.

Hmm I'll look into it, I did see some other types of spray sealers on dickblick.com but I don't know much about some of them.. I just know to stay away from krylon
