« on: April 16, 2014, 12:02:13 PM »
I would really love it if you guys could tell me whether you think I should customize or restore the following G1 ponies:

SS Sundance
NSS Sundance
White/Faded Windy
Confetti
Scoops (TAF?)
Braided Beauty
Curly Locks
BBE Frosting
Moondancer

thanks!

I'd like to see how they look first, but in particular I'd avoid customizing Confetti unless she's in REALLY rough shape. It's your choice in the end but I'd avoid customizing a pony unless they're really, REALLY baity, or already prepared for customizing (hair and symbols gone, etc).

Confetti is in decent shape, her hair is good although her tail is reallllly frizzed out and ratty. But she has bad dark spots which im assuming is pony cancer. Also her face has some weird blue dots and veins I assume is pindot. So to be restored she really needs a new white paint job. Would it be against restoration regulations if I used pearl white cuz I think that would be really pretty. The same for Moondancer whose symbol is totally gone almost.
Also I have another question...
ALL of them seem to have a weird little indentation at the base of their neck. It's like a little line that crosses the neck seem, almost like it shows where the edges are supposed to line up or the right way to turn the head. Is this something people do or is it actually part of the pony?

The line on the neck is exactly as you describe, for lining up the position of the head. They were manufactured this way

The spots on Confetti could be pen or marker, especially since you say it's blue. Sunfading will probably take care of it. Maybe acetone. Although how bad are the spots? Just a few is not unusual.

As for repainting, it kind of depends what you're doing with it. If you're keeping it, you can do whatever you want, although if you want a mint-looking one, you may be better off trying to buy one. A full-body repaint can be difficult, unless this is something you have experience with. If you're just asking what's commonly done, that doesn't sound like something most people would bother to repaint, but without pictures, it's hard to say. If you're considering what others would want to buy, that's a different issue and depends on who's buying.

well they are just for my own collection, I'm not going to sell them or anything. But I also don't want to commit any sins against the ponies lol Because I'm doing it out of love to bring them back to life. The blue dots are on her face. the veins go under the plastic though. The dark brown spots are scattered all over her body and look like pony cancer :/ Moondancer has it really bad. I'm a pretty experienced artist, mostly I work with polymer clay and acrylics, so I figured this would be fun and could contribute to the pony world just by helping to keep them alive and loved ^.^

Some people like the faded (white) Windy, so if she's in decent shape you might consider selling her.  Other than that they are your ponies and all are fairly common, so I say do what you want!  Especially if they have cancer (which doesn't sunfade completely, in my experience; Confetti is unfortunately quite prone to it).

Cool, thanks! Here are my plans so far..
Confetti- Restored with pretty pearl white body and touched up cutie mark
Moondancer- restore cutie mark, customize body
Scoops - her ear is almost all the way torn or bitten off so i will use two part epoxy to fix it and then give her a pearly paint job. I might also add some pink and purple glitter to her cutie mark. Her hair is cut pretty bad too, and so is NSS Sundance, so we'll have to see about that...  >_<
Also.. I'm strongly considering using a mild adhesive to hold my brush n grow ponies heads on. They just wont stay and don't have the little bead thing where it's broken off. The mechanism works.. But since I'm just going to be styling and displaying them... Surely it would be ok to just secure them with some kind of tacky glue that would wash off? Other than that they are in great shape.
Oh and I know she's common and stuff but I just got my Kimono too, she's so pretty ^.^ She's near mint except a tiny scar on her back leg you can only see in the light. yay xD

As others have said, it is very much your pony, your call as to what you can do to them. :) My only advice however would be try everything possible to restore first rather than customise :) And by restore I mean that sun fading and hard work will probably clean your Confetti up rather than having to give her a FBR. Just be careful that whatever you do to them is not something you end up regretting :)

Be careful if considering sunfading Confetti - some versions of her will burn in the sun.  If her plastic looks milky or tan, probably not a good idea to try.   Beyond that, none of those are particularly rare or sought after, but they are vintage toys and there is a finite supply - restoration and cleaning are always the best idea to try first.   You can always customize later if unsatisfied with the results, but it's pretty hard to undo a custom pony.

Agree with hathorcat and others saying try to restore first.

Ok, yah I agree with you guys, I think I will wait and just try to make them look their very best and see what I can do. I have two Glory's now but one has almost no cutie mark left at all so I am painting her body with pearly white and going to customize her, but the others I will try to restore. I will be careful with Confetti though because her body does have a tannish/milky look to it and I would hate to mess her up any more >.<
