English question for native speakers
« on: March 23, 2014, 02:26:47 AM »
I got a really stupid question, but I can't figure out the answer.
I want to talk about train delays. 'The train will be delayed by 20 minutes.'
How do you ask about the time of the delay?
How long will the train be delayed? Is that correct?
I'm totally clueless right now.

Thanks so much!

"How long will the train be delayed?" Will get you the answer of "20 minutes" based on your scenario. So it is correct if you want that answer. If you want to know how much longer you will be waiting, you'd say something like Loa suggested. The answer for that would be anything 20 minutes or less. Is this for a class or are you planning ahead in case a train you are planning to take is late?

"How long will the train be delayed?" is perfect :)  You could also ask "How long is the delay?" or "When can I expect the train to arrive?".

Also try, "How long will the train be"?

That question is in danger of getting the answer "about 300 feet" or "four carriages"  ;)

"When will the train arrive?" and "how long will the train be delayed?" are both fine.

Also try, "How long will the train be"?

That question is in danger of getting the answer "about 300 feet" or "four carriages"  ;)

Yup, especially in places where they like to lengthen or shorten the train in accordance when different days and events in order to accommodate more or less passengers. Knowing how long the train is will let you know if you will be able to get on the one that is about to arrive or if you will have to wait for the next one.
