Can air or sunlight accelerate regrind?
« on: February 21, 2014, 07:02:00 AM »
About 3 months ago I got my childhood ponies out of storage.  They had been stored in ziploc bags in cardboard boxes (even when I was a child, my ponies were often stored in ziploc bags).  After seeing a forum post around that time that Party Times usually had regrind issues, I thoroughly checked her over and found a few spots that if you squinted might seem to be more pink than her normal orange, but honestly it was really tough to see.  Since then, she's been on a shelf behind solid wood doors, so she hasn't been getting much sunlight.  I looked at her yesterday and she is covered with pink spots :(  Really obvious regrind!  I don't know if other people have had this issue, but I thought I'd check, and possibly put it out there that keeping a pony relatively sealed might help prevent regrind from showing up.  It's a shame since she really was a pretty even orange color before  >_<

I have no experience with regrind yet, but it's known that sunlight can activate or accelerate the chemical process that causes many a pony to yellow. It wouldn't surprise me if there's something that can accelerate the process that causes regrind. (I believe dye breakdown was deemed to be the cause last I checked?)
I'll be curious to hear other people's experiences.

I'm sorry to hear about your pony though. :(
That's never a fun experience.

Keeping ponies sealed in plastic bags in a cardboard box is a very poor storage environment - it can accelerate plastic breakdown.  I would say that the storage method for years and years is more likely to have caused these problems.  Sunlight causes fading more often than regrind issues, and it's important to keep air flow going - if you seal ponies in bags, the chemicals in the vinyl "sweat" and begin to break down faster.

But there really isn't anything one can do to stop or slow down regrind problems.  It's just part of collecting G1s.

Hmm.  I don't think it was storing them in bags that did it since none of my childhood ponies have any signs of cancer or plasticizer breakdown. Wouldn't the problem have been visible when I took them out of the bags if the storage method is what had caused it?

Maybe it's just because the ponies I had are the ones that aren't prone to these problems, but it's only after being removed from the bags (but still kept mainly out of sunlight) that the regrind issue showed up (still cancer and plasticizer-free).  In the future, I'm planning to keep my problem-prone ponies behind light-blocking doors, but it didn't seem to help Party Time.

Yes, unfortunately it could be the current environment or the change in environment which has caused the problem. Age marks and regrind are all a result of the plastic breaking down in some way or other. Heat, atmosphere and exposure to them is what causes plastic to break down and therefore what could be the cause for the change :(

Thats so unfortunate!

I'm sorry to hear about the regrind Bibsy, I too know the regrind/cancer heartbreak so I feel your pain! Have never figured out the best storage solutions....

...although this is something I haven't heard until now. You are absolutely right. It's just part of collecting G1's! Gave me a whole new perspective that just because some of my ponies aren't perfect, maybe they aren't supposed to be... Thanks! :thumb:
