Those darn paper masks...
« on: February 22, 2014, 06:12:46 PM »
Alright well you've seen the ponies in stores right, the ones with the cheapo paper masquerade masks or whatever. IMO the paper masks that come with the pony are kinda lame, like theres no way I'm gonna want to keep that with my toys yknow?

Anyway another reason for me to disliked them happened just today, I was at the store looking for an earth pony with the no-bangs hairstyle to customize. I quickly grabbed what I thought was one, but when I got home and took it out of the package, it was actually a unicorn! The darn mask had covered up its horn and I hadn't even noticed because I was just checking the hairline. In retrospect maybe I should've actually looked at the little character portrait on the box but... Guess I'm gonna customize a unicorn now. Oh well.

I'm not really sure what else to add. What do you think about the little gimicky variations they'll throw in the toy lines? Has anyone else had the same surprise-unicorn experience I have?

Which pony did you buy? I remember when Sunset Shimmer's pictures were first released we couldn't tell if she was a unicorn because of the mask XD I personally don't like the masks at all. Cheaply made and covers up the ponys' face :P

Yeah, it was Sunset Shimmer that I got. I didn't look at the packaging at all, guess that's PRETTY MUCH my bad. But why would you make a thing that covers up their darn horns!!!

Yeah, I've always thought having paper/cardboard "accessories" sold with a toy was kinda cheap and silly. I mean seriously how long do they expect those things to last? They're supposed to be for kids aren't they? Maybe it's just because we grew up in a generation were our accessories were actual accessories, not just pieces of paper printed to look like accessories. :P

Its certainly frustrating that the mask covers up her horn but to be fair to Hasbro, as you mention, they dont really try to hide she is a unicorn on the packaging itself.

I do agree, I would have much preferred that the masks be made of plastic and while paper accessories have become a main stay in G4, its not as if we did not have paper/cardboard accessories even back in G1 - party hats and postcards and invites all in the Party Pack, all of which are sought after now and all of which have survived the last 30 years not too bad.

For me its about keeping the price down. If Hasbro were to start including detailed and plastic accessories in packs - rather than re moulds of ponyville which are all easily cast on multi sections in production it would bump the price of the item up. When there is little quality control involved in the line and the ponies are already so small, I would prefer they have that $5/£5 price point than $8/£8.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

I want different ponies. Not the same ones over and over with different accessories and those little cardboard masks had to be the worst. Those they do fit the dolls too and that's kinda neat.
