Baby and ponys
« on: March 01, 2014, 07:38:37 AM »
I don't know if I write in the right thread, I'm sorry if I did write wrong.

But to the topic is it dangerous to have your pony shelf and a new born baby in the same room where you sleep?

Thanks and hugs Luna :P

Not health-wise no, although eventually the baby will want to play with the ponies, and drool/ gnaw on them.  :)  However I would consider Hasbro official ponies to be safer to put in one's mouth rather than fakies.

I don't know if I'm being ignorant, but just because a toy is officially branded doesn't make it any safer, surely? It's like choosing to put a Marc Jacobs perfume bottle in your mouth vs a supermarket one, no?

As for my personal take on this, it's not dangerous, no, but long term wise, I wouldn't advise allowing them to gnaw on the paint -  it's still not proven if it's lead containing, and everyone knows the health risks associated with lead paint. Even though it's a teeny tiny amount, as for my personally, I wouldn't let my child nibble it, my kids will be given my ponies, but I'll make sure they don't nibble them. I'm not trying to scare you, more trying to enlighten.

Hasbro has to keep to certain standards with their chemical contents as they are primarily sold in developed nations with regulations on that sort of thing, with corporate offices in those countries that can be sued.  Fakie companies don't typically operate from a UK/US/Europe/Canada address, so they are not able to be held as liable as a large corporation with a legal team and standards to keep.

Using the fashion example, I'd probably feel safer putting an official designer Italian leather handbag strap in my mouth rather than a knockoff brand that might not even be made of leather, or came from questionable sources!

The question was if a new born baby can sleep in the same room there the ponys are on display :)

I think part of it may depend on how many ponies you have. :) When I open the door to my pony room there can be an over powering smell of plastic when the room has been closed up [closed window and closed door but still vented] perhaps for a full day or two. Not a nasty smell but just the general smell which a lot of soft [some scented] plastic is going to create. Plastics break down and do give off chemicals and some of them are gases. So while I dont think there is any probably any serious harm that could happen, personally if we are talking about a couple of bookshelves filled with ponies then for the initial few months I would perhaps not keep them in the same room at night. If we are talking just a couple of shelves filled then I dont think thats anything to worry about.

Either way, with some thing as precious as a baby this is no harm in being a little paranoid, right?
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

It should be completely safe. I wouldn't worry about it.

What you will need to consider is whether, when your child gets a little older and more mobile, if you're okay with them being tempted by the lure of your collectible toys. They will want to play with them, and at a certain point, they will do just about anything to get their hands on them.

When they do, the most likely damage will the to the toys themselves, mostly just the hair getting mussed up. But if you have a child that tends to put things in their mouth a lot, I would not advise letting them near your ponies, as they can probably choke on or swallow some of the hair.

Until your baby is old enough to move around and get things, there should be nothing dangerous about your Baby sleeping in the same room with your ponies.  Eventually, you will want to get a shelf to put your ponies up higher, and you might want to make certain the shelf is securely attached to the wall so it cannot be pulled over or fall over.

Additionally, if you are concerned about the chemical composition of the toys, you could always get a little air purifier.  We did when my son was born.  Just to clean the air a bit.

Also, congratulations on your Baby!
