Little dog weirdnesses...
« on: February 01, 2014, 12:38:40 AM »
Does anyone else have a/some little dogs who behave oddly? I have 2 chihuahua girls who behave quite peculiarly:
Ceydia always has to be touching me and sometimes goes so far as to sleep on my chest at night. Under the covers. Pischer also sleeps under the covers. I've been told this is a little dog thing, but it's so very different from my miniature schnauzer, Schmutz, who doesn't like to be touched while sleeping or sleep under blankets. In fact, he HATES it.
Ceydia and Pischer are also obsessed with chewing their toe nails. They don't do it when they're stressed...quite the opposite as they seem to do it when they're super relaxed!
I was raised with Labrador retrievers and most recently (prior to teeny dog invasion) I owned a boxer X and an Irish wolfhound. I'm still not used to how bloody NEEDY these things are!
Does anyone else have a little dog (or big dog) weirdness to share?
(BTW we have no behavioural issues and no dominance problems in the house. Pecking order is me-Pischer-Schmutz-Ceydia, and everyone seems happy with that)

I had a pom that had to be with constantly. It wasn't because he was nervous just liked to be near me. He would sit on my feet when I did dishes. If I was on the computer he'd be under the computer desk. And... if I took a bath he would sit on the side of the tub

Small dogs aren't dumb. They know they are vulnerable. They want to be near us because we are their protectors and they know they will be safe. My dogs like to chew their feet to go to sleep. And Sandy likes everyone to look at him and talk to him about his food while he eats it. He also plays with his food and wallows on it before he eats it. He's a little crazy.

Like you I used to mostly have large dogs. I got my first Chihuahua from my grandmother 7 years ago. Now I have 3 and a border collie/chow chow mix. Toy dogs are nutty by nature. They are brilliant and manipulative. They really do fit into a person's life differently than a larger dog. Oh! Sandy also gives hugs by squashing his head against my face. And he will put his head in front of my face to block my view of screens. I try to look over him and he moves his head up. I try to look under and he moves his head down. I end up laughing so hard I can't even scold him. I'm afraid Nori's "quirks" aren't so cute. She was badly abused before we got her and has "issues". Onigiri....... She dances for her clothes. She's addicted to them.

OMG, that's funny! Schmutz loves his clothes, Pischer is the only one who goes kookoo for car rides and Ceydia HATES wearing a sweater, even though she's almost hairless! Pischy is a little...I want to say that she behaves like she was abused but she never was! She does NOT like new people and still distrusts my BF even though he has known her her whole life! Ceydia is more tolerant of new people, but she's a physiological nightmare. The same breeder I got Pischer from called and asked if i wanted a "blind" white puppy. She was so teeny, and she has these stars in her eyes...kind of like cataracts but not quite as bad. The new owners had brought her back since she hadn't moved at all after they brought her home. Seems without the other puppies and dogs to guide her she was completely lost! They knew I was a vet tech, and thought she'd be best with me, or put down. And she was such this fat little bratwurst...she still is!! OMG my heart fell out when i saw her! She's proven to be one of the smartest dogs I've ever had the pleasure of knowing, too...she can fetch (she has ding-y toys with bells inside them so she can hear where they land) and she fetches like a retriever! She has a few more things wrong with her body, like her plumbing...her piddler isn't shaped properly, so she doesn't have anything that's discernable as "normal" down there...it all works, though, which is what really matters. She's fat...she, or all intents and purposes, looks like a white Twinkie on toothpicks!
Schmutz i got from the Humane Society a few years ago after my Irish wolfhound freya passed away, leaving Mumford, my boxer X, absolutely lonely and inconsolable. I saw Schmutz' picture online and he looked so gawd aweful I just had to go meet him! Drove the hour and 1/2 to where he was in Toronto and the people at the Society tried EVERYTHING to talk me out of adopting him! "He's old" they said. "His teeth are rotten...he's going to need a lot of dental work..." "He's a bit of a jerk" (they actually SAID this...about a dog!! "He isn't very nice. He tried to bite someone the other day" I'd worked at the Humane Society many years ago when i lived in Toronto, so they had that on record and agreed to bring him out because of that. He WAS hideous! Hair all over the place, mouth looked like an old, mossy cemetary with tombstone teeth just aching to fall out, he smelled bad and as soon as he walked into the introduction room he looked at me and cocked his leg on the doorjamb! It was love at first sight! He had to be at least 10 years old, and here it is almost 5 years later, and he's still disgusting, but now he's blind, deaf, AND disgusting! Lol! I wouldn't have him any other way :)

LOL Nori came to our house severely anemic, so covered in fleas her skin looked like it was crawling, skin and bones, heavily pregnant (she gave birth to 6 healthy pups 5 days later), snarling, and snapping. I looked at hubby later that evening and said, "You realize this means we are going to have to keep her?  She's a bite risk and if they home her anywhere else, there's a good chance she'll end up hurt, dead, or at best returned." It's 3 years later and she's still glitchy but I wouldn't trade her, glitches and all. I suppose she does have a cute quirk. She's ALWAYS THRILLED. She spends her whole existence on cloud nine even when she's getting in trouble! The happy face, the happy prance, the wagging tail, the play growls, she is 100% happy 99% of the time (the other 1% she's had a trigger moment and is terrified and snarling/snapping for a couple seconds then straight back to thrilled). Oh and she has a tongue issue. She can't seem to control it. She's a OCD licker. She licks EVERYTHING! Including the other dogs and Oni hates it. I get the joys of "MOM!!! She's licking me!!!!" going on all day.

I have a basset x pit, Drusilla, that has very short legs.  In spite of that, she loves to lay on her back holding her toys with her front paws above her and try to bite at them. She also rolls onto her back and 'snake walks' across the living room.  I can only imagine she's itching her back?

I also have a cat, Custer.  Custer and Dru love to play 'tag.' Dru will chase Custer down the hall and Custer will chase her back.  The other day they were running between rooms in the hallway and I swear it looked like an episode of Scooby Doo!  They kept changing who was chasing who!  I just wish I had it on video, I was laughing to hard to even try.

I have a yorkie, his name is Captain America, but we call him just call him Cap. He grew up with 2 cats, so he picked up a few cat-like behaviors. He likes to be up very high, he'll climb up and sit on the back of chairs or sofas. He loves to sit in the window sill. And sometimes he even tries to bath himself, like licking his front paws. And I don't mean because he got food on them or anything, nope just sitting in your lap and then for no reason decides he needs a bath. The poor thing is so confused, he doesn't know whether he's a dog or a cat. But that's alright, he also taught one of my cats some very dog-like behaviors.  :P

xD I had a chihuahua dachshund mix and it always wanted to sleep under the blankets too. When I had my Pomeranian, who in this case was not a small dog xD but still smaller i guess, He would bark and howl EVERY time one of the neighbors pulled into THEIR driveway, but if anyone pulled into ours hed be silent! What an effective guard dog huh?

 I have what I've been told is a yorkie-poo (she could be, but I don't know for sure) and she can't control her tongue, either. It's hilarious! She mostly wants to lick people, and not the other animals, but her tongue sticks like four inches out of her mouth and just flails away. She's not allowed to lick my face (elsewhere is fine, just not the face ) but she gets her tongue as close as she can without actually touching me. I can feel the wind from her tongue flapping!

I also have a shih-tzu who used to sleep in the litter box. That's mostly just gross, but pretty weird too.

I have 3 little dogs.  The dachshunds both sleep under the covers; Milo spoons with my husband (lol) and Penny sleeps pushed up close to me or on top of me.  Ava, my mutt, typically sleeps on my pillow, hugging my head.  It's not very comfortable, but it's sweet.  They just love to be as close as you'll allow!

OMG this is so Milo too.  Happy all the time and licking everything.  If he can't lick you, he'll lick a piloow, himself, or the air.  :haha:

Harry is a bit bigger then a toy dog, but I am pretty sure he thinks he is one His favourite sleeping position is around your neck which is a bit awkward for a small terrier. :P We had to travel 6 hours to get him as a puppy and all the way home in the car he travelled wrapped around my mum's neck so we are pretty sure for him its become a comfort position. I wouldnt have him any other way; having had terriers all my life I am not used to a snuggly dog and with him I love it! :)
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi
