Sunfading with Fading Pink Hair?
« on: January 23, 2014, 08:36:32 AM »
I've never sunfaded before, but I've heard good things about the marks it removes.  I have Milkweed and Tumbleweed that came to me from two different owners.  Although they both have gorgeous pink hair, Tumbleweed has a pink mark on her left ear and a slightly lighter one just above that same eye.

It looks to me like something that she was resting against bled onto her, rather than actually being drawn on.  She also has initials written on the bottom of her hooves.  I wouldn't even worry about them since you can't see them on display, but since I'm thinking of sunfading her anyway, I thought I'd mention it.

I'd like to try sunfading her, but I'm nervous since I don't want to risk damaging her hair.  I've heard covering her hair in aluminum foil would work, but I was wondering if, because it's such a small spot, I could sort of cover everything except that spot.  Would that make her look splotchy?  The other questions/answers on the Arena make it sound like turning her regularly is important to keep the color even, but I figure even if that spot gets a little paler, it will look better than the pink spot now.  Any help for a sunfading newbie would be appreciated.

Oh wow check out that  pink hair!! There are others better practised at sunfading than me, but I did try getting a mark off a Steamer with super-pink hair one time. I wrapped him so so soooooo well in tinfoil and just left the bit I wanted faded exposed like you say. nhal09 now owns him and his hair is still great.  As long as you are super-careful about covering all the risky areas, it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Super-careful! (cute pair btw)

I believe foil is the usual recommendation for wrapping up a pony before sunfading. I would be very, very careful. :) Maybe even take some pictures for reference so you can chart your progress and be sure that the hair isn't fading. Their hair is so gloriously pink that it would be a shame to lose it. Check back often to be sure they're still coming along well.

Thanks for the recommendations!  They really are a cute pair so I will be suuuuuuper careful.

I'll take some good reference photos of the marks to see if it's fading and I'll be able to compare hair color to her sister and stop if it seems to be fading.  I definitely don't want to mess her up as I've never seen a pair with such pink hair before.

Wow! They are adorable :)

As said, its perfectly possible but the key is to not only ensure you cover there hair but even the plastic around it. UV likes to bounce and I have seen symbols which are completely covered even start to fade around the edges when the rest of the pony is exposed to sunlight for a very long time. Just wrap it up so much you think its too much - better safe than sorry.
