Getting Rid of Mothball Smell?
« on: January 18, 2014, 01:59:34 PM »
I recently got a Rock-A-Bye bed with accessories.  While the accessories were all in good condition, they all smelled like moth balls, particularly the fabric ones like the slippers, blanket, and nightcap.  I soaked them all in hot water and detergent, oxi-clean and hot water, sprayed them with febreeze, and the smell is definitely better, but not gone, particularly in the blanket, which is made of a really odd plasticy-felt type fabric.

Anyone have any ideas what to do to get rid of the smell?

Lots of fresh air!  :(  Try putting everything in a pillowcase and putting it outside in a dry, non-sunny spot for the better part of a day.

Yes, they definitely just need to air out.

I put mine outside in the winter time in one of those cloth laundry bags for delicates, or in the freezer with a box of fresh baking soda. Didn't take long...about 2 weeks, and the odor was gone!

I would suggest fresh air in an old pillow case. Pop in one of those nice smelling tumble drier sheets for laundry in with them if they still smell a bit funky :)

Thanks!.  I have them sitting on a table in my screened porch, so I'm hoping the smell goes away in a few weeks.  If it doesn't I try the dryer sheet method.

I agree with the half the time in a tupperware with baking soda, then out in the fresh air - and repeat as many times as you need. The smell will shift eventually :)
