Could you recommend a free website hosting place?
« on: January 15, 2014, 05:07:46 AM »
Hi everyone,

I have collected some information which I find might also be useful for other people, so I would love to set up a small website for it. I have thought about a blog, but I think a website would be better for the structure.
I wouldn't want to pay for it though... so I decided to ask for some advice: could you recommend a good free website hosting page which I could use, and which I don't have to fear will disappear very soon?

Thank you in advance for your help!

I use Wix and Moonfruit. Weebly is good as well. To be honest they all have pros and cons; and I find I move from one to the other depending on what the websites requirement is. You can set up accounts on all of them and play around to see which one works best for  you.

thank you for the tips!

I would rather find one single host and keep the site there rather than moving from time to time, as my main aim would be to provide something that will be available on the long run (just like some useful info sites I do not visit often - some not even yearly - only when the need comes up, but in such cases I have always found them under the old bookmark, at the same place, for the last 10-15 years. I don't know if they are free, I just suspected because they are ad-packed and that. you know, how free sites looked like during the end of the 1990s :P ) for collectors who might need it. I do have most of it up on a forum in a thread I made 3 years ago, but I would be happy to have it somewhere too where it doesn't disappear with time because of new threads.

(also, I already have a bad experience when my site - together with who knows how many other sites - was deleted, because the host page just closed down after several years. I still miss some sites which I used to check and visit, and I never found them re-opened at different places)

Oh sorry...I don't mean you would move it around...I mean before you decide on one of free hosts test them all out [or at least 2 or 3 of them]. It takes 2 minutes to set up an account with them and does not cost anything. Each of the platforms however has different features, a different way to design and offers different levels of service on its "free" package. Its the reason I use all of them - different sites have different requirements which I can get on one but not then get on another.

Anyone know a good place to set up a free collectors website?
« Reply #8 on: January 16, 2014, 08:52:28 AM »
Hey guys!

I want to set up a collectors website for the new dolls called Zelfs. They are super adorable and I would love to make an ID site listing all the different merchandise and dolls for this new line, to help out collectors. ^_^

Now I used to make a lot of websites back in high school and college, but that was a (secret) number of years ago. >_>;; Back in those days I would use www.geocities.com, tripod.com, etc. They sometimes had a few banner ads on the page, but it was a free site after all.

Unfortunately all the sites I used to use back then are now gone. o.0 So, does anyone know any free websites I could use to make my Zelfs Collectors ID site?

Thanks for your help! ^_^
Thank you Thimble for my amazingly cute avatar!

ah, I see, sorry  :P
...and that definitely makes sense, thank you for the tip! :thumb: I might just try them out and see. another thing I think I will do is look at them from the other side as well: I will check some sites hosted on these, I can also see some basics that way.

I've used webs.com (aka freewebs.com) and wix.com. I think I prefer webs.com, but I haven't had a lot of experience with wix yet...
