Humidity Troubles
« on: December 23, 2013, 07:57:04 PM »
Summer is taking it's toll on my collection. I use adhesive hooks to hang things on my wall but items as light as backcards are dropping off like flies.

But I'm most worried about what my fish tank may be doing to my G1s and MOCs. I've got a disposable dehumidifier set up on top of it in the hopes that it will draw the moisture away from my precious ponies but I'm still worried. Should I take the extra precaution of moving my MOCs to the other side of the room or do you think they'll be safe near the fish tank?

I'd appreciate any advice on the matter, thanks.  :)

If it were loose ponies I'd think they'd be ok unless the humidity gets drippingly terrible, but I'd move the MOCs to better conditions simply because they could become little greenhouses. Ounce of prevention & all that! Then again, I don't own any carded ponies; perhaps someone owning some will chip in.

I personally wouldn't keep my ponies and my fish tank in the same room, forget using a dehumidifier...  :(

Unfortunately I can't move the tank or the ponies, I've only got this single room to display ponies and keep my pets.

I might move the MOCs to the other corner unless anyone else chips in with some advice? :)

I am with LBS, I would personally prefer not to have ponies in the same location as anything which is going to cause humidity in the air.

However, if you are in the position where that is not possible, then keeping them at a reasonable distance from one another is the best bet. In addition you could add a small internal dehumidifer to sit beside or beneath the MIB/MOC ponies. Its not going to be efficient for the whole room but it may help a little in the area immediately surrounding the MIB/MOCs. Also in a very humid space because of the way condensation can gather inside and outside plastic bubbles which are not air tight, its a good idea to try and ensure a healthy air flow in order to prevent moisture build up of any kind on or in the cards.

I've now moved them several metres away from the fish tank and already have one of those dehumidifiers on top of the tank, I'm planning on buying more to stash around the room just in case. I'll try to keep a good airflow through the room too, thanks for the further advice Hathor :)

They look and feel alright, I'm just being paranoid in the heat and wanted to be more informed and prepared.

I think you are right to be paranoid :) Even if they developed no problems, its always worth moving things around and protecting them just in case!

Urgh Brissie is so bad this year! I packed all my sales ponies away, and pulled them out yesterday only to find some were damaged! There were some nice (but thankfully common) ponies stained by things that normally wouldn't cause staining just because it's been so hot and humid while I was on holiday. I'm starting to inventory them again, and downgrading those ones to bait unfortunately, I just don't have the time to sunfade, I want them gone before I buy any new ponies, I'm all out of room here.
