Pokemon Card Experts Please Come Here!

My brother is really into Pokemon cards and I'd like to get him some (or even just one really special one) for Christmas.  Problem is, I know nothing about them.  I'm looking on Trade Me http://www.trademe.co.nz/ and I'm wanting to spend around $30.  Would you Pokemon card experts be able to point me towards an auction or two on that site in my price range that would make a great present?

I have a bunch that I was getting ready to photograph and put up for sale. They are all from generation 1, late 90's, all halographic! These were from my childhood collections and I have a bunch!
Does he want anything in particular?

When I looked at the site, there was a set for about $30 with 300some cards. That would be your best bet. If he is just starting a collection, he would need bulk. Is he wanting to collect or battle? If it is collecting, having rares and holos is what you need to go after. There were a bunch of lots of a particular type (grass and water were the ones I seen right off) for pretty cheap ($5)-that would be a good starting point for battling.

Oh my yes. I remember getting those for birthdays and christmases many years ago!

Base, Jungle, and Holo huh? Yup, those are the original releases! Sounds like he wants to collect, since those cards will be almost 20 years old.... I've seen tons at my thrift shop. I sort and package the Pokemon cards. I get rares and classics a lot... the one that made me smile most was the original holo Charizard card. The stuff of legends!

Your best bet is trying auctions on ebay :--) I see quite a few listings for cards there if you want me to PM you some listing names.
Since he's probably collecting.. I'd say go for rarity over quantity :--) Maybe you could ask him what ones he has so far..?

Yep he's definitely a collector, I don't think he battles.  I know as much about Pokemon as my brother knows about ponies (which is zero) but I think it's so great that someone else in my family has the crazy collector gene!

He's going to let me know which ones he needs so I'll update this thread when I hear back from him, any help would be appreciated!  And Brittney, I've sent him the link to your card sales so I'll let you know if he's interested!

Ah yes, Charizard. I never got the first edition one but I lucked out once with the second editions!!
