Any Cabbage Patch Kids Experts?
« on: November 28, 2013, 01:34:24 PM »
I know very little about these and am trying to identify the two below.  I have not had luck on any doll id sites as there seem to be so many cabbage patch dolls.  The one in the dress is dated 1987 and the nude doll's tag says: 1978, 1982.  If anyone knows which ones they are, do you also happen to know a fair price to ask for them?  Thanks a bunch  :lovey:

They are adorable! I know we have a few collectors around. Hopefully they'll stop by.

Thanks!

If it helps, I discovered the one with the dress has hair that "grows" when it is pulled

I am not positive but that smaller one might be a preemie and I believe the one that grows hair was called a Cornsilk doll.

Did you try posting them on the forums at ghostofthedoll.co.uk? Great site and they're rather prompt with ID'ing.

The girl is a Coleco headmould 23 Growin' Hair girl, from 1987. With CPK, the date of the Cabbage Patch Kid is the one on the butt signature, the colour also shows the year. With vintage CPK the factory they were made also makes a difference, the side tag should have a circle with a letter in which stands for the factory name.
The other one is hard to tell from the photo, but it might be a Headmold 4 Coleco baby, the headmold number should be the incised one on the back of it's head. Has it got a bean filled bottom? The manufacturer's name should be on the back of it's head too, like Coleco, Hasbro or Mattel. Coleco babies with a pacifier face had headmoulds 4 or 6. They were prone to 'Cabbage Pox', the equivalent of what some MLP collectors call 'Pony Cancer', due to a reaction with the baby powder scent and the vinyl. Hasbro took over CPK production in 1989, Mattel a few years later.

Wow thanks so much for all the info!  The nude baby does not have a bean-filled bottom, and says Coleco on the back of its head.  I can't clearly make out the date on the bum signature, but I think it may say 85?  (the tag says 82 though).  The signature itself looks like a blue/gray, whereas the signature on the one wearing the dress looks purple, though I did not see a year in that one's signature.

Do you happen to know how much these go for?  Thanks again for all the info, had no idea about specifics like that.

If the baby is 12 inches tall, it would be a baby and the beans have been removed, if it is 14 inches it's a Preemie.
Ebay completed listings is the place to look for final prices, the prices dropped out of the Cabbie collecting marked several years ago, condition and original clothing make a difference. If kids don't have Cabbage Pox that makes a difference too.
There used to be millions of good Cabbie sites out there, books are available too. Only a few CPK collecting online clubs exist now, 10 years ago there were lots, with hundreds od members. This site gives signature info.

Good luck!

This one is 14 inches, so must be a Preemie.  Thank you again for all of the info, and the link.  That was all very helpful! :D
