Teeny Weeny Families - does anyone remember them?
« on: November 25, 2013, 06:52:27 AM »
do you remember this toy line? I believe they were available in shops in the mid-late 1990s, and, even though I was already more a teen than a child those years, I loved these playsets! the one that first hooked me was the wedding playset - this was also the one I first obtained. I was always a huge frog-fan and collector, and I always loved tiny things, so offering 2-3 cm small frog figures in a playset is an easy win on emptying my (or, well, at those times my parents') wallet XD
I also had the school playset with owls in it, and some extra figures (frogs, of course  ) that were sold separately.
my sister and me used to play with these playsets for countless hours. we both loved how tiny, but still so beautifully detailed the figures were, and the creative idea of the houses being made of objects originally used by humans.

I'm not a collector of these playsets, but I love them, still have the ones I had when I was a teen, and I am definite about that I'd pick up any of them if I found them in a thrift store.

...do you want to know the reason why these toys came to my mind just now? earlier this month I found a vintage Polly Pocket-lookalike shell in a thrift store with some not belonging figurines in it - they were Teeny Weenies, and two of them were tiny frogs! I bought the set, but until yesterday I never had the time to clean them. now as I was cleaning them, I started to wonder about whether I already have these two or not. it was a long time ago when I last played with my playsets, so I didn't have clear pictures in my mind, but these two just seemed so small - too small. and right after this I remembered something: on the boxes and cards of the playsets I owned there were mail order offers via which you could get 3 baby frogs. sadly it was only available for UK and Ireland citizens, so I could only dream about getting them, but never had the possibility to :(
I looked up some info on the toy line and the mail orders, and it turned out I was right: I never had these small froggies as a child/teen, because they are indeed 2 of the 3 mail order froggies!
after 15 years I can finally call them mine!

and it looks like they are enjoying themselves in my froggy-friendly home - they have already made a friend too:

so, is anyone else familiar with this toy line? did you have them as a child, and did you like them? do you still have or collect them? If you do, please share some pictures! ^^

Yes, my sister and I had a few of these.

I seem to recall the Grand Hotel, the Beauty Salon, the Windmill Bakery and Cake Shop :)

With my younger sister we had lots, I think all the playsets and almost all the families from Series 1 and some of the second. I guess I liked them because we had so many but I don't remember being very attached to any character in particular. They're still in my parents' attic somewhere. I'd totally sell them but I cannot do that without asking my sister...

I DO! I grew up with them being a 90s baby :)

When I go home next I'll take pictures I have several of the playsets - like the big light up clock tower, Iron chappel and shoe haberdashery or something like that and all the animal families still! My mum was OCD about me losing them....I appreciate it now! :D

Stay tuned and I might be able to help  ^.^

it's nice to see others also remember them and loved them :)
judging from the posts I suspected the line was not available in the US, but then I found that it ran under another name (Itsy Bitsy Families). I found this site to be very useful on investigating the sets I had, and also really detailed, with separate pics of all the tiny accessories:

http://teenyweenyfamilies.weebly.com/

anyone who is interested can check them out here :)

by hindsight, the Katie's Wedding playset I owned was a little "duh" compared to most of the other similar-sized and -priced ones. please do not take this as an offensive, as I really don't mean it as one, but to me, a schoolhouse, or another house seems to offer more play value than a church. I do remember feeling the same way back then as well, it's OK to play wedding, but then you need a place for the newlyweds to start their new life, and so on - maybe this was the reason why I also owned another set (the Teeny Weeny High School)? I do know I wasn't really into playing princess and/or wedding-related games as a kid. I really loved the wedding playset because of the frogs, and it was evident of me to have chosen it, but I needed another playset which is wider useable, so to say.
...and I was also pretty fond of owls too already back then :P

I'd love to see your pics mylittleponylover92, do share them once you get the chance to re-unite with your playsets again :)

By the way, unlike the site above states... they were sold as Teeny Weeny Families, not "Mini Sweety" in Finland, or maybe both, but I only ever saw Teeny Weeny Families.
