Pony melting and re-moulding
« on: November 22, 2013, 08:28:19 AM »
OK I'm hoping to share expertise about melting or re-moulding body plastic here - not everyone's cup of tea I know. So far I have noticed:
1. Even if I boil a spoon handle it is not hot enough to smooth over holes and chew marks
2. If I pour boiling water directly into a pony the plastic goes a bit wibbly but I don't feel confident repairing holes or chews like this in case I trap water inside the plastic. However this technique works for putting a pony back into shape e.g. put a bit of board between legs to re-separate, or just palpitate to re-plump dented in sides.

I have not had the confidence to heat up an implement with a blow torch or in the gas cooker but I am wondering whether this might be the way forward as below 100 degrees centigrade just isn't hot enough.

I want to get bolder about repairing some of my ponies ponies that have holes, chews or wobbles so if anyone has any suggestions about using heat to make repairs to the plastic, I'd love to know!

You can bake a pony at the safe temp you bake sculpy and it will sometimes remove minor bite marks.

Unlike say Breyer model horses made out of Tentite plastic, ponies do not respond to heat in a good way.  They will normally bounce back to their original state or very close to it.  You can heat to a small degree older G1's that have lost most of their plasticizer and have it stay but even then it will try to bounce back a little.  When I do heat those, I find that treating them like a Breyer and putting them into an ice bath helps a touch.  Letting them cool with out the cold shock allows the plastic to return to the original position.

Best of luck with your projects.
