Modeling clay - what brand and where to purchase
« on: November 30, 2013, 10:27:00 AM »
What modeling clay is used to add to a pony's body and head?  What brand is it?  Where do you usually purchase it?  Is it available online?

When you add the clay to the pony is it a kind that needs to 'bake' or can it just dry?

I'd be interested in that as well! Most of the modeling stuff (that is suited for plastics) you can find in Germany is rather expensive...

I use Super Sculpey and Apoxie Sculpt. Super Sculpey is easy to use and is an oven bake clay with an open work time. Can be found in craft stores and such.

Apoxie Sculpt is a two part sculpting material with a work time of 1-3 hours and it air dries. Can be found online under Aves Apoxie Sculpt.

Both are great materials. Just depends on which you like better or which you like better for certain things.

Is it safe to oven bake the ponies?  I wouldn't think so, is that clay for parts separate from the pony?

Ponies actually bake surprisingly well  :)  I've always baked mine after removing their hair and before any painting.  The only problems I've ever run into are with G3s, sometimes the foot with the magnet would sort of lift off of the magnet (but I was told that can be solved by having the pony stand in water while it's baking) and when I tried to sculpt a loooooong dragon neck onto one of them, the weight of the clay on top of the softened plastic caused her front half to melt :/  Pretty much, as long as you're not sculpting something that weighs too much and you follow the low heat setting for baking, you should be good :)

Yes, it's safe to bake a pony. As Katika mentioned heavier items can make the pony buckle. Like large sculpted wings. When the pony gets hot it gets soft and will buckle under the weight.
But smaller items aren't a problem.
