Rating pony condition
« on: October 23, 2013, 11:47:02 AM »
Hi all.

I have some ponies that I want to sell soon.  Some have flaws. I want to make sure I accurately describe the condition.  Do these flaws make the ponies excellent, good, poor, or bait..  (Mostly g1)

- dry / frizzy hair at the end
- some symbol rubbed off on on a sparkly symbol
- g3 with the heart on foot rubbed off slightly.
- small marker spot
- a brush and grow with no frizz in the hair but pink is faded, working mechanism but some cancer or regrind starting (is she just bait?)

Hhm, this is a tough topic, as there seems to be a lot of personal opinion involved in classifying condition. I've seen ponies I'd call 'excellent' listed as 'near mint' or as 'very good', so I always think it's safer to list the specific flaws your pony has in detail to avoid a misunderstanding.  ;) Having said that, I would personally classify those ponies as...

dry / frizzy hair at the end = excellent if only slight, very good if it's quite bad
some symbol rubbed off on on a sparkly symbol =  excellent if only slight, very good if it's quite bad
g3 with the heart on foot rubbed off slightly = excellent
small marker spot = very good
a brush and grow with no frizz in the hair but pink is faded, working mechanism but some cancer or regrind starting (is she just bait?)= good

I do not generally call a pony 'bait' unless it's chewed up or totally covered in age spots. I also never list a pony as 'mint', because someone is bound to find a speck of dirt or something!

Hopefully some other ponies will give their opinions.  :)

Yup, definitely no indicators for bait in your list. I think no single thing takes the pony's condition rate up or down, it's always a sum of tings and also what is common in a type of pony: for example a big brother with a couple of cancer spots can still in my eyes be in excellent condition because those are very common among this type of ponies. It's the overall look of the pony that makes or breaks it.  ;)

As Whippycorn says, ask 10 collectors for their opinions on what is mint or what is poor and the chances are you may get 10 different answers :P

I dont think you can honestly scale things. For example Whippy says "excellent" if the hair has minor dry ends. I personally would consider that an issue and would nor judge a pony higher than "good" with that problem. See what I mean...collectors, we are just so fickle and fussy :P

If you are selling my suggestions is just to describe the pony and all issues he or she may have. Dont overly concern yourself with classifying the pony in a scale. Let your buyer read the description, look at the issues and then decide where the pony rests on their own personal quality scale.

I'm not very picky at all, but i think it may be because at the moment, I'm just trying to expand my collection :) Best thing you can do is just list all the flaws you see, and take detailed pictures - that way, the buyer can decide for themselves :)

I happen to be a very picky collector, so the more descriptive the condition, the better. You can list a pony as excellent but make sure to point out every flaw it may have in the description. I even tell you the number of times I've been mislead when buying a pony that was listed in "mint" condition. A lot of times they come with a mark or flaw that wasn't mentioned, even if it's small. As a seller, you should make sure nobody gets any "surprises" when they receive their pony. When listing your pony, try to think like a picky collector. Your description might make the pony sound worse than it actually is, but it's better to be safe than sorry in this kind of situation.

 i'm clearly not very picky.

:) I was just using it as an example. And it does not help that I am super dooper picky :P

Its all down to individual perspective. Something which is super important to you may not be as significant to me - so your "good" would be my excellent :)

It's cool Hathorcat  ;)  At least we all agree it's best to list all the flaws and let the buyer decide!

I agree with everyone, I'd rather someone know all the flaws of the pony but still want to have it so they don't end up with any disappointment.  I will make sure to take detailed pictures and describe the pony's flaws as best I can.

It would be great if they get to go to a home where they are cared for..  it might be silly but as I clean them up and take their pictures I'm getting all attached to them again, haha.

*nods* what everyone else said, everyone has different standards as to what is bait, good, etc.  to me, the marker spot, in particular, would depend on where it is, if the hair covers it or if it's on the NDS leg, it's still an excellent pony, but if it is right by the symbol, or on the blush or something, it's good or played with.
