I just make my own. Oddly, my needles from walmart hardly ever break. Just snag a 4 piece collet (is that the word?) Exacto knife, it looks like an x where u put the blade. Find a needle size u like and snip the top of the needle eye off

I also use a homemade one just how Colorscapearts described.  It works great if I do a good job cutting the needle eye properly.  I like that it is cheap (I already had an Xacto knife), works well, and I can decide exactly how long to make the tip.  You do have to make sure to get a proper size needle, though.

Before I put in a plug, I widen the hole a bit by putting a thumbtack in the hole for a minute or so.  I think this saves wear and tear on the needle.

^This. I had a few I purchased and they seemed to break constantly. I finally just decided to make my own (well my sister made it for me) and since then I haven't had any broken needles!

I use either normal sewing needles, or more recently doll hair needles. Never used a reroot tool, except the once, and I broke the needle. So I put another one in, broke that one too, handed it back over (I was at a custom demo) and carried on quite happily with my needle and thread routine.

I've only recently (for my last three customs) used doll hair needles and the knot method, and it works so well I can't see why it took me so long to try it! It's much quicker - I used to use sewing thread to tie each hair plug in place and it took so very long to do, although I guess it added an individual touch to my work.
Thank you *wyvernchick* for my lovely avvie!

I make my own tools and cut my own needles.  I use the needles from Walmart, they rarely break.
Here's my tool with custom comfort grip. I have a looong needle in it right now because the last pony I rehaired was giant NMM. Usually I use a much shorter needle.

I use long beading needles. I get 4 for 3 bucks and they last me through a dozen or so heads. I've never had luck with the rehairing tool-which I made with a pencil and the needle shoved in the eraser.

I do the thumbtack thing, too :)
And make my own tools!
Never thought of using an xacto though, that's really clever. I have one made out of wood. Drill a hole, put a needle in with som superglue and snip off half the eye(though diagonally).
When that one breaks, I'm totally using one of my xactos. I prefer scalpels for cutting things anyway.
