I think the government is terrible for putting a lot of people who work out of work! Of course, except for the high powers who are still getting paid but not in office- a lot of people are sitting at home waiting to go back to work. It stinks that WIC shut down because my friend works day and night to pay bills and depends on WIC to feed her two kids. Our government is so childish. T_T I am glad that we have our military service and post office! Im very thankful mail is still being delivered because usps is already struggling and a lot of employees got laid off this year. Im thankful they are still getting paid and get to their job! We thanked the mailman for delivering my ponies yesterday! :)

Im also upset EPA is mostly shut down and National Parks + NASA is totally down...you know, because our envoirnment isnt imortant or anything! At least thats what it seems like they think.  I knew we should have visited the Petrified Forest last month on our vacation! We even said we would visit it later this year perhaps. Pooooop and beans! x(

From what I understand, a lot of those who are affected by the shutdown are entitled to back pay if the congress does pass a budget (or I assume a continuing resolution) that includes the appropriate funding for their organization/job.

This isn't entirely true. Congress has to vote to apply backpay to the federal government employees who have lost pay during this shutdown. It is assumed Congress will do this once the budget mess is figured out, but it is not guarenteed.

Coming at you from a lovely federal government employee :)

Ah, okay. So it's a separate vote then? The source I heard it from made it sound like the backpay was worked into the budget. Like if the eventual approved budget included funding for staff pay for all of October then backpay was applied, but that it was possible that whatever budget was worked out might not include appropriate funding for that for all agencies. I can't quite decide if it makes more or less sense to do it that way or to have it be a separate vote - like so many things it's certainly an interesting and complex process. I always appreciate learning more about the way the government works, because it's so easy for people to be completely unaware!
