Too much anxiety, shutting this down before I scare myself off the forum for good.

Is it just a particular color of Rit dye? Is it a particular color of pony? What are you doing to prep the ponies?

and of course---do you have a photo of the end result?

I have never have that great of a result from dying as even over time the ones I have dyed in the past end up leaching through the paint. I'm a FBR person myself either with makeup sponges or airbrush.

I'm sorry you are having so many problems :(

Oof it's fine, thanks for being polite. I don't think to provide this sort of information.

The ponies are all white, but the rit dye is a mix to get the colour I need so that may not be helping.
I prep by beheading them, removing the washer and all the hair, strip the paint off with acetone and then giving them acetone cotton swab baths before giving them a gentle but scrubby bath with some warm water, fairy dishwashing liquid and a washcloth designed for gentle scrubbing. After that is dry its just another run under the water and they're left to dry.
No I don't have pictures, I'm going to try again when I get taupe dye and take pictures of those and see what the heck happens.

I just don't know what went wrong. :muffin:

It sounds like some cute mood ring trick, but it is horrible to wake up to your hard work having been ruined by a distinct colour change in their bodies, and only the bodies.

Something tells me it's to do with G4 plastic differences between the body and the head, but that can't be all of it since G4 dyes have been successful and haven't done... this.

I've never seen a G4 dyed successfully. The head and body are different plastics, so the heads hold dye better and the bodies fade and discolor horribly. It's a pretty consistent problem with G4s.

I've only customized one G4, but it involved a dye job. It's true that G4s are more difficult to dye because the plastic differs between the head/body; I ended up keeping the head in the dye longer than the body. I can think of a few things off the top of my head that might be causing trouble (emphasis on *might*, because I don't know your exact process):

(1) You mentioned that you used a white bait. White baits are notoriously awful for dyes because they pick up color unevenly.
(2) Your bait could have retained some of the acetone that was used to remove its symbols. This could do some harm to the dye job. However, I think it's unlikely because it sounds like you cleaned your bait very well before dyeing.
(3) Your bait may not have been boiled deeply enough. When dyeing I keep the heat up high and let the bait boil extra in regular water as well as the dye.
(4) Also, make sure to use powdered RIT, not the liquid stuff.

I don't know if this will help any. Dyeing G4s is a pain in the butt.   Honestly, if I ever work up the courage to customize another one, I'll probably just do a FBR.

The ONE time I got a G4 to dye properly and match, well a few weeks later it changed to a horrible blah grey color (I had originally dyed a sweetie belle a bright yellow.

G4 plastic is notorious for problems, and even if it looks good at first, time will tell.

Im sorry it's giving you problems, but I would recommend painting. :/

I've used the liquid just fine with dying a G3 or two (granted the plastics are different between the gens), however I only used a cap full and used boiling water like with the powder... plus it was black rit.

I think your best bet would be a FBR. G4s are small enough that it should take less time to do a FBR than some larger ponies.
