Vintage Pony Hair Care
« on: August 15, 2013, 01:49:56 AM »
I bought some vintage ponies recently and was wondering what you normally do to make vintage pony hair look shiny, silky and as new again? :)  Do you use shampoos, conditioners, or anything else (heard some of them may be harmful for synthetic hair?) How do you style? Any info would be helpful! :P

I use conditioner and a metal comb (for pets). That works for most, occasionally they are a bit more challenging.

LOl, we all start out as fakies... wait til you're a princess rinse n spit! hooray!

Most of us give them a good conditioner soak. I also use Garnier's anti-frizz serum. It's an oil that coats and moisturizes hair. With a synthetic strand it works great to soften and detangle. I usually leave it in overnight (just as with conditioner) and then rinse EXTREMELY well. You don't want ANY product left on the hair that could possibly corrode it over time. I cottoned on to how well it worked when I received some G3's with oily hair from ebay, and after rinsing they looked AMAZING, so I asked the seller. I only use it as a last resort though, I really don't like putting oil on ponies too much - I mostly use it on my fakies and ponies with tinsel, so I don't break or stretch the tinsel when detangling.

nope, anything will do the trick. I'm currently using tresemme, so that's fine... my ponies basically share with me, so whatever I use, they get some too!

I use baby shampoo and conditioner :P However you will find that most conditioners work just as well as one another. I would suggest you get a wide tooth metal comb for brushing as its better on the nylon hair. Also allow pony hair to air dry naturally it will sit better and be less likely to go wild again.

Conditioner is a main stay of any pony pamper kit it really can work miracles when you allow it to soak through the hair.

Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

This is what I do for frizz;

1. Wet pony hair completely.
2. Shampoo hair thoroughly, like you would your own.
3. Rinse out shampoo.
4. Combine some anti-frizz serum and a gentle, natural conditioner and mix             it up with a cocktail stick.
5. Massage anti-frizz concoction into pony hair and allow to sit for a minimum of 5 minutes.
6. There's two things I do. Either
a) rinse out conditioner and style
b) the boiling method.

The Boiling Method
1. Boil up some water (do NOT rinse conditioner out of the pony hair)
2. Leave the water to boil and, minding to not get burnt, slowly dip the pony hair into the water (I wear gardening gloves to be safe)
3. Let the hair sit for a good minute.
4. Pull out hair and comb the mane out flat.

The boiling method looks extremely soft and silky and straight, but not boiling allows you to style.

To dry I focus a lamp on the pony until dry, and then if its styled I spritz with a good hair-spray, then allow to set for an hour.

Just DON'T boil colour changing hair.
