I think you have a fair representation from wonderful peeps so far - yah maybe a tough crowd in some sense, but I would think you would prefer honesty to fawning "me me" raving loons, yes ? ;-) :-)
I agree about the money part should not be the focus... I am in the camp to think that those who flaunt their money and like to brag about it are more akin to the great and powerful Trixie vs Twilight (to use a FiM reference) and please know I am fine to be wrong (it is just my opinion) but I think we all know the phrase that money doesn't buy you happiness
now the joy of discovery is a whole other thing :-)
Being a part of that possibility of discovery is to me the real fun = honestly more the Indiana Jones hunt for the lost toy than just scoring to spend more than a monthly mortgage payment as frankly I am one to shy away from B-I-G expenditures (ha = must be my real estate investing background = selling in 2005 to have kids...little did I know the luck of that move at the time) BUT I love the knowledge that maybe some of the joys of childhood in mine and my own kids' lives can be preserved just a bit in the memory of why we keep these ponies around - who can resist a rainbow ?
And who can resist knowing life is more fun just knowing the world over is playing with ponies?? I mean how amazing cool is that to know just as we are all children once, that we can all share playing and imagining with MLP -- even today. To me, that is more important than the money - finding the common ground we can all as a human family share and enjoy and have fun with while we are here.
So I hope you do put the whole collecting and customizing MLP world into a positive light = our world needs more positive creativity these days = and I am glad in that sense if you do "get" what being a part of the MLP community is all about as a collector yourself :-)
If your focus is as you say, than I am sure you will find the treasure you seek
