Best way to straighten/tame G3 tinsel hair? :)
« on: June 18, 2013, 12:24:18 PM »
Hey Pony People!

Its been a longgg while since Ive posted on many of the forum threads here!

Buttt I do have a question, although Im sure its probably been asked many times over, so I do apologise!

Anywaysssss....I was wondering whats the best way to tame G3 tinsel? I know with my G1s my straighteners work a treat! But they just do the opposite to my G3s!  >_<

Any help/suggestions are welcome and appreciated!  ^.^

Also any pics of your restorations are always great!  :)

Many thanks to all that respond  :satisfied:

Tinsel obeys no master.

Well, OK, sometimes it does. What I do is:

- Wash the pony's hair as normal - I just use water and conditioner
- Comb the mane as you normally would so it's nice and tidy
- Towel dry the hair so it's damp and not soaking wet
- Wrap the mane around the neck and wrap the tail around a hind leg
- Using strips of plain kitchen roll/paper towels I wrap the hair so it stays in place. If it doesn't adhere in place well you can use small amounts of tape to stick the paper towel together - don't get tape on the hair as it will undo your hard work when you remove it
- Leave the pony standing overnight in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight
- Carefully remove the paper towel strips
- You should have a pony with much tamer tinsel as the paper towel will have pressed it down as it dries. You'll also have a tidy mane and tail!

I'd show pictures but I don't have any on hand right now. Hopefully that was easy to follow. :P

Clear tinsel is definitely irritating  >_< some of my G3s have wild tinsel! D:>
But anyways, getting tinsel straight isn't easy :( I've tried this one way that a user posted on mlptp that involved drier sheets, fabric softener, this, that and the other ...*sigh*, well it worked for that user who made the process, didn't work for me :/ all it did was made poor Hidden Treasure's mane and tail duller, sticky, and smell like clean laundry :s
Oh no!

For wrinkly/frizzy tinsel, i've used straightening iron. Do NOT use this on iridescent tinsel, it will only go worse. But for any other tinsel, it works wonders. I've managed to make tinsel look brand new like this.

Yeah Ive noticed it makes Iridescent tinsel wayyyy worse! I tried it on one of my Mintys once and regretted it haha  >_<

But if it works on normal coloured tinsel than that's great  ^.^ I was wondering what to do with my Star Catcher I  :P

Lets just say Im a bit OCD about how things have to be - I like tidy!  ^.^

Also I like restoring and asking this question helps when I come across some bad G3s that look electrocuted! I got a few like that in a big bundle I bought of eBay not too long ago!  :)

I'm quite the opposite lol! Plus I love tinsel and sparkle so I wouldn't wanna ruin it (which I really probably would). I still have tinsel up in the house from christmas

As long as they're clean, I'm pretty much good. Though I am going to attempt sun fading - in the UK HAHAHA - but that's another topic ^.^

Mega frizz though..... that would deff require the straighteners out for play!

yeah, ebay lots tend to be quite crazy, most of my G3s are from there and clearly owned by kids who backcombed and all sorts of things >.<

Over the years I have straightened every kind of tinsel and had no issues with straighteners on them. But I agree that a lot of people seem to encounter issues the iridescent type on G3s - the only thing I have noticed is that it likes a much much lower temperature for straightening than other tinsels but I have still managed to straighten it with heat. In order to get the lower temperature I use a clothes iron. Make the hair wet, add conditioner to ensure it does not stick. Then put the tail or mane underneath a dampened cotton pillow case or similar and iron away. Use quick swipes of the iron and keep spraying the pillow case in order that it stays damp.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

Wow thats amazing advice! I had no idea!    :)

Btw that makes perfect sense about the lower heat for that certain type of tinsel! I only have Ghds to use atm and you cant control the heat on them they just get HOT :P

You're always so good with advice Hathorcat! Thank you!  ^.^
