Non Pony - Horse Art WIP - Almost done
« on: June 13, 2013, 06:30:44 AM »
I'm working on this for a friend of mine - her daughter is into horses and graduating high school - she asked if I could draw a horse rearing in cap and gown.

Now I've drawn horses in the past - it's been a few years since I've done one, and I've never had to much confidence in my legs and hooves. I have the same problem with hands and feet on people.

It's almost done - I just have to re-ink the lines in the mane and tail once they dry.

So what does everyone think?

The back leg/hoof in the foreground could use some depth in shadowing, and maybe a bit more definition on the knees, otherwise much better than I could EVER do.... Can;t wait to see the final version.

Thanks - re-did the back legs a little.

Anyone with any other suggestions?

Not bad Ivy, your pasterns to ankle to hooves are a little rounded, horse are more angular then the ponies.  Here I did a little rough on your drawing.  You also have the one back hoof turned and the whole leg is not turned.

I agree with most of what Diamond has outlined there.  Good luck!

I personally think that back leg works either way   I kinda like how it was angled out towards the viewer a little, as the drawing overall is stylised. But given how those front legs are straight out the front of the horse, the leg turned inward works a little better with that.

My only little suggestion is that the horse's right foreleg is a little awkward. I feel like it needs to move up and be angled up a bit, if that makes sense?  But I can see a lot of work has gone into that, and I know how much of a pain in the neck it can be to move a whole limb!

I think the expression on the horse's face, the spectacles and the idea to do this in general is absolutely darling!

I don't have any critiques because I can't draw to save my life. I think it's such a cute idea and a very nice drawing. I think she'll love it.

Looks great Ivy, I think you did super on it.

It is hard to find a real horse when rearing turning out the back leg only from the hock/pastern.  That joint does not work that way.

I think it's a very sweet drawing and you did an excellent job.  If you are looking for critique for the future, I agree with Diamond's observations and really don't have a whole lot more to add without being repetitive.  I think that anatomy books are amazing for figuring out those tricky bits.  I learned to do horse hooves from an old $0.25 book I snagged at a library sale when I was a kid.
