Sculptors, how do you do it?
« on: June 16, 2013, 03:08:10 PM »
I'd like to try sculpting clothing/hair/etc. on ponies, but I've got a few questions I would like answered before I begin.
1. How do you put sculpting on the pony? Do you bake it beforehand and then glue it on, or do you bake it while it's on the pony?
1.5. If you do the latter in the previous question, what temperature do you bake both the pony and the clay at?
2. What brand of sculpting material do you use?
3. How do you support large sculpted objects, such as wings?

Your responses are greatly appreciated, thank you in advance! :)

I can't answer most of these questions as I don't use Oven clay for ponies anymore. I had a bad experience with shrinkage once and cried over something that took me days of work that broke and shrunk.

I do use Apoxie Sculpt, apoxie clay, and Fixit sculpt. All have their strong suits.

I use a armature base of wire on my wings, then mesh or foil, then sculpt, then feathers. I feel it makes them stronger over time and less prone to drooping when I sculpt.

HOWEVER when I did use oven clay, I used the same method (wire/foil sculpt) and baked according to the package directions on the clay. I never sculpted anything over 1/4" thick (anything that looked like it was foil underneath) You can also do a "BOIL CURE" for thin items. http://www.figurerealm.com/viewcustomtutorial.php?id=39

I do use oven bake clay :D

1. How do you put sculpting on the pony? Do you bake it beforehand and then glue it on, or do you bake it while it's on the pony?
Most of the time I sculpt directly on the pony (even if it's an extra) and then bake it.
Never glue anything before baking it!!

1.5. If you do the latter in the previous question, what temperature do you bake both the pony and the clay at?
I bake both for 230°F around 22-27 minutes - not longer.

2. What brand of sculpting material do you use?
I use Fimo (most of the time) but also discovered Cernit.

3. How do you support large sculpted objects, such as wings?
I build a mesh wire subconstruction first or just some wire base then sculpt the wings on it.
After baking I glue loose parts to the wings & the body =)
