Cleaning Questions!
« on: June 07, 2013, 01:51:29 PM »
I've reading that some people have used oxy clean, bleach, even denture whitening tabs to clean their ponies.

My question is, how? What do you do with their hair?  I started cleaning some ponies that came from an almost 20 year stint in an attic, so they're a little grungy.  I'd like to get the white ponies as close to white as I can, before I try my hand at sunfading.

Also: have a picture of Cherries Jubilee drying!

Soooo, bleach is put in with the hair? (I read about 2 pages in, lol.)  I'm so afraid of the paint coming off or the hair losing color.

My advice is to try that with a really common baity G3 or something...I would not recommend putting bleach anywhere near pony hair as it will dry it out or even burn it.

Oxyclean is fantastic stuff. I resort to that before anything else. And oxyclean will not burn the hair :)

Take the tail out :) If you are going to the effort of removing the head in order to clean out the inside of the pony then almost every time you should take out the tail - otherwise you run the risk of getting the washer/grip wet and encouraging rusting. Also if you clean a pony with her tail in and then pop her head back on, it can be very hard to get the section of tail which is inside the body completely dry - if its not dry over time it will simply rot/break down.

Seldom do you need to use anything other than shampoo or conditioner on hair. Yes there is the odd exception but more often than not shampoo & conditioner [sometimes repeated] will be all you need to clean hair. Avoid bleach if you can - there are much better and less abrasive cleaning methods.

As for the head obviously you cant remove the hair but I would use things like oxyclean or simply soap and water or a denture tablet for cleaning the inside of a head rather than bleach as they will not damage the pony, just remove dirt.

Thanks guys. :) I have an off brand Magic Eraser, buuuuut, I simply do not get the results that others have on here.  Maybe I should stop being a Scrooge and splurge on a real one, lol.

I shall also invest in some Oxyclean. :D   Is there off brand Oxyclean? Lol. I dont go to the store often. XD

Most super markets will carry their own brands of some kind of "oxidising" product. But sometimes you are better purchasing the actual product [if its only because it is a product which has been tried and tested by collectors and therefore you know there should be no issues with using it. Sometimes using a less expensive or alternate brand is a risk as it may contain other chemicals which are not as pony friendly.

I got a 1.3 lb jar of Oxyclean for I think around $5 at walmart, and it's lasting me a long time. I like to buy store brands when I can too, but I really recommend just getting legit Oxyclean. =)

Just remember not to put Oxyclean anywhere near tinsel, glitter symbols, princess symbols or twinkle eyes!  :|

For hair I usually just use shampoo and conditioner, sometimes a fabric softener soft for frizz.  ;)
