That's what I voted for. If there is something that sets them apart and makes them different from another of their kind, then I usually keep that pony for my collection.

For me a duplicate is to have a second pony of the same character for example a first issue G3 Pinkie pie and a 25 anv Pinkie pie, however  the 25 anv would be a variant of the first original pony.

However G4 Pinkie pie I would take her to be a complete different character from G3, still shine bright Pinkie would be a duplicate but a variant of the #1 pony  :accomplished:

I call them variations, I love to collect them :)
