Painting over smooze/cancer?
« on: May 28, 2013, 06:18:45 PM »
So I've got a few very baity G1s that I'd like to do FBRs on and I'm just wondering if smooze/cancer are known to cause any issues with the paint.

One of the smooze victims is a purple Ember that is so badly affected that she is brown (she's still purple inside, that's the only way I know that purple is the original color!) and I have a Chief with so many cancer spots that he looks almost polka dotted.

I would hate to put the time in and send them off to new homes if there may be issues down the road with the paint jobs so I figured I'd check in first. :)

Thanks!

I have one I am working on a Chief, but I am priming him to seal it in.  Hopefully that will work.  I am sure some long time pony artist will give you better information.

I've painted over both plenty of times with no issue
though I recommend cleaning with dial soap inside and out and a whipedown with acetone first

I typically get rid of the smooze before I paint.  I soak for a longgggg time (sometimes weeks!) in an Oxyclean bath.  It gets rid of smooze just fine (but not cancer).  I then do any FBRs in many coats as the pindots soak up a lot of paint.

Hey CSA, how often do you change the bath water?  I have one smozzed pony who pose I like but I have been staying away from it due to not knowing what to do with it.

Roogna:  Good to know.  I gave them a good soak in Oxyclean and scrubbed the bejeebers out of them with a magic eraser and then Dawn and a toothbrush.

Colorscapeart:  How long do you usually soak and at what concentration?  I considered sealing them with dullcote first before starting to paint, wonder if that would reduce the number of coats of paint needed since maybe the pindots wouldn't soak up quite as much?

Pictures of what?  The smooze and the cancer?  I could show you the smooze, but I already started painting over the cancer so that would be harder to show.  ;)
