Unspun fiber for PP?
« on: May 17, 2013, 12:17:49 PM »
Just a thought... I know most of us run out to the craft store to purchase yarn when we need to make a PP, but has anyone considered just purchasing unspun fibers to use instead?  It's just yarn before its been twisted into yarn and (I would think) would save a lot on fiber loss...  Has anyone done this and had good or bad results?

I spin yarn and have some fibers on hand that are super poofy so I may have to give this a shot :D  Would anyone be interested in seeing the results and possibly where to buy this raw fiber?

I wouldn't even know where to look for unspun fiber, but I'd love to see how it turns out!  I know the few times I've tried making puffy hair I've grabbed the wrong brand of yarn and not been able to make anything out of it >.<

I had some, but I gave up.  I was going to make a KISS pony band with it....but when inspiration left, so did the fiber!

I'm an occasional spinner with unspun fiber on hand and I also wondered about this. I would think you would need a fiber with a fairly long staple, especially if you were using the rerooting tool method. I was thinking maybe alpaca or silk?

I'll be watching with interest to see how you make out and I'm planning to try some alpaca on one of my WIPs so I'll be sure to post my observations as well. :)

I used raw Suri alpaca fleece off cuts that I then dyed, on this Kirin, it was hard work and should of tried for a longer staple, but it was free from a breeder friend, so I was still greatful, there was lots of fibre loss. you can see what it kinda looks like, It would be harder to rehair in every single hole I didn't do so many as he isn't a pony. Mohair would also work, you can buy raw alpaca and mohair on ebay.

I thought someone found some unspun fibers of some sort at a craft store recently?

I'm thinking you won't be able to comb out her hair once this is done :(  It'll still be super floofy though :P  I've been playing with my fibers and I think they're just too short to be brushable without leaving her with the shortest hair ever...

I'm almost done painting her so I'll be starting the rehair process soon.  I'm thinking a Spring pony because the colors of fiber I have are dyed in a pastel mix of yellow, blue, pink, and green.  I decided a G4 Applebloom body would be a good test subject (minimal amounts of hair :P ) and her eyes are green. Any ideas for her cutie mark?
