sunfading via uv light
« on: May 09, 2013, 07:01:15 PM »
there was some wondering a while ago about whether sunfading with a uv light would work. as it's coming into winter here, i thought i'd give it a go. i found a uv nail light on ebay for under $12 with postage, i got one that swivels as the normal nail lights only have enough room to fit fingers in  it arrived today, so the testing begins. i had it running for nearly an hour but had to switch it off as it got really really hot. but i did get to see how unclean my clean kitchen bench is  here's a pic of blossom getting some treatment. i took before photos of the ink spot, so will take more pictures every day in the same spot at the same time to make it easier to see if this will work!

On the same idea, would a SAD light work?  They don't have UV light, but I wonder?

Did the light get hot or where you had it aimed?  If aimed maybe use a trivet so similar made to hold a hot plate.

The top of the base just next to the on/off switch gets hot. Real hot!! I'm thinking they are only designed to be used for minutes at a time. But if this fails I'll try a UV tube in a fish tank light :)

I have a fish tank uv light I use in winter. It's not as good as the summer sun, but better then the winter sun.

I just let it run 24 hours, as it is designed for that anyway.

Butterfly, what type of tube do you have in it? I went to the pet shop yesterday to get one, they only had UV 5% and UV 10%. And were $35!!!

I'm pretty sure it's the 10%, we've had our light for around 12 years, so it lasts a very long time.

You could probably check eBay for cheaper prices.

I'm currently got an eBay search open :) I might try a reptile shop too me thinks :) or get a 3 foot one and put it in the tank that actually has fish in it  would save running 2 lights. Now how to string ponies under the light but above the water...

This is very cool :)

I have heard of people using aquarium UV lamps before like BFB mentions but not seen an experiment with a UV nail lamp. I cant wait to hear and see how you get on!
