dyeing help!
« on: May 10, 2013, 09:09:29 PM »
i have a G1 pony i am trying to dye black for a custom. I have tried dyeing it before black, and i thought id try it again. the last time i tried dying it i was in the kitchen for 2 hours at least following every method i could find to dye this pony. in that two hours it went from light purple to just purple. I am really hoping to get this pony dyed and start making the custom thati may put in the customs contest at the fair this year. anything helps! Thanks!

This might be a question better suited for the custom forum. However, some pony plastics don't take dye as well as others. I've never dyed a pony black but I'd think it'd probably be less of a headache to just do a FBR as black coats really easily.

I don't think you can achieve a deep black colour with dye, and even if it works, it'll likely fade in a few years... sorry.  :( Also remember dye needs time to set before you start painting, preferably up to 6 months or so. But maybe someone with some actual dying experience can give you better advice, I'm just repeating what I've seen around the customs forum.

Painting is the safest route.  Dyeing a pony black is a gamble.  Even if you nail the color evenly and it doesn't fade it WILL leach into whatever you paint on the pony.  Letting it set for a few months helps, but its still no guarantee.

I have never been able to achieve an plain dark black - super dark grey or purple or blue but not really blacklike what paint does and I let my dyed baits sit a year before sealing and working with them  - sorry your original plan won't work in time.

I have tried one method i have found and it finally came to black! I am not painting anything on it, its going to be a replica of my actally pony  but i will be sure to let it sit for a while.
