G1 Eye Painting tutorial?
« on: May 08, 2013, 08:12:42 AM »
Hello

I have an Italian G1 Twilight who is in a terrible condition with the body. She isnt beautiull pink anymore but has faded yellow spots all over her body. So I was thinking of spraypainting her completely white. But because of that I might spray over eyes not sure perhaps I can tape those off. But in case it does go wrong. Does someone have a G1 eye tutorial?

Are the spots yellow or brown? You could try sunfading her vs re-painting...

To me it just looks like she has faded unevenly (maybe she was partly covered for a while). It's definitely worth trying sun fading if you want to get her all white (just cover her eyes, hair and symbols so they don't fade too). I think her eyes look pretty standard for Italian eyes, they were often misprinted slightly (and sometimes a lot!). Either way, there are tutorials for both sun fading and eye painting in the customs tutorials thread: http://mlparena.com/mlp/index.php/topic,283445.0.html

Here's a good sun fading tutorial: http://mlparena.com/mlp/index.php/topic,288060.0.html

Good luck with her and I look forward to seeing the end result!  :)

I wish my monitor wasn't so horrible I can't see the pic decent.
All I could suggest atm:
Purple ponies have a tendency to lose pigment... I wonder if that's the case with her... You could try dying her body.
What have you done to try and clean her up?
If you're going to re-paint I'd suggest using a make-up sponge, and light layers.
As for eyes use a fine tipped brush to paint them and try to keep the body paint away from them as much as possible.
Or you could just trade her to me! Mwah ha ha ha...

not really a tutorial, just a tip i use... when you go to prime her body before you do the FBR, just spray lightly on the face, so the body has enough to hold the paint but you can still make out the lines of the lashes and pupils on the eyes. makes keeping that G1 look with minimal work so much easier if you can just kinda paint over the originals. =P and if the primers a bit thicker on the eyes than youd like just lightly sand it til you have your guidelines back.

Wow, poor little pony!  One thing to consider it that if you completely paint her body she will basically be a custom pony and less a genuine Italian.  Perhaps the sunfading more would help her, as suggested above.

Then I twill try to sunfade her again. Just need to be patient I guess. However there is something else that bothers me and that is that her white hair turned more.. greyish and darker. Is it an idea to also sunfade the mane?

Hhm...my white haired Italians do not have purely white hair, but I assumed it was because the hair used on Italians is quite different from normal G1, especially in texture.

I'm not sure, but I don't think it would hurt to try sunfading the white parts of her hair, but you'd have to make sure you covered the purple streak.

The sunfading process can be very long especially if you live somewhere further north. It might take the whole summer even.
