An easy way to see if your G4 has a metal washer inside or not is to take a strong magnet (like from the hoof of a G3) and see if it's attracted.

You have other concerns besides rust, mold would happen as well. and Believe me, I prefer tail rust over internal mold ANY day. Just be careful. After bathing its better to remove the heads, dry the insides and let them air dry for a day or two before putting them back together. Just make sure that the insides are completely dry before putting them back together.

Unfortunately Zargata, G4s with their neck plug make it impossible to clean inside/dry out completely.
Perhaps packing them in an airtight container with some silica packets??? I'm unsure as to how one would completely get the moisture out of a G4.

I've had a run in with a rusty G4 myself. I got a secondhand Cheerilee that's gone all orange and discoloured at the root of the tail.  >_< I still have yet to behead her to replace the washer.

As others have said because there is metal - and because it is a cheap product it will not be treated and therefore it will rust. As to the why of metal - cheapest option most likely.

It is such a shame so many people have come across this problem so early on in the line :(

I have a question!

I recently ran into this thread and its got me a little concerned because I have been rinsing my ponies in the sink the whole time! I never submerge the entire pony under a bunch of water, just the mane and tail with some conditioner but other areas get a little wet.  I havnt seen any signs of rust,  but it makes me nervous! Are my ponies at risk of mold or rust? :0 i had no idea g4 ponies had metal in them! I am definetly more cautious!

The metal clasp was worse than the washer, really.

Yuck, anything with metal is pron to rust.. I just recently took on a challenge to clean up an Autumn crisp.. I took her head off and wish I hadn't I've NEVER seen such rust, and the washer was deteriorated and crumbled into her hair UGH! took me an hour to pick out the pieces and clean the rust from her tail :( not to mention the atrocious amount of cleaning it took to clean her insides out...  it messed with my phobias and OCD!

When I clean, regardless of how wet the pony got, if I removed the tail I set the pony to dry on it's neck, so the water drains out. The head sits the same, on the plug. If I didn't remove the tail, I prop the pony up so that the tail hole is the lowest point, and any moisture in the tail comes down the tail and subsequently dries. If it was just a wipe over, and the head remained on, I sit the pony so that the tail and ears are the lowest point, and any hair moisture (not that there should be any, but JIC) will drain down the hair strands to the ends, not go inside the pony.

Ok, this is disturbing because even on disgustingly rusty G1s, the clasp is at least usually not rusty! So not only did they not learn anything from decades of making ponies - they are now making them even worse

Yes unfortunately - as others have said anything with metal, unless chemically treated [which is an additional expense you dont tend to find with cheap toys], will potentially rust. When you are cleaning just make sure that no water gets in side the pony and you should be fine - tipping the pony upside down when washing and simply washing until just before the root of the mane/tail is the best bet.
