Jewelry Baby Ponies tinsel
« on: April 28, 2013, 02:33:07 AM »
Ok, I am curious and I do not think there has been any topics about this...
I have noticed that its not uncommon to see baby ponies with some sort fuzzy stuff in their mane and tail...I have thought it come from the tinsel but I have seen nothing to confirm it...What is it and how does it occur? Most other tinsel ponies dont seem to have this...But even the Baby Ruby that I have that have allegedly only been on display have it...
Is it a bad idea to pluck it?

Do you mean the cotton like substance?

The UK Jewellery babies have a slightly different type of tinsels than seen on earlier G1s - it is a central cotton-like thread with a tinsel coating. So over time the surface of the strand can be damaged due to brushing/general wear and tear, etc - it flakes off or rubs off and you are left only with a cottony thread. Although more often than not you actually end up with tinsel which is a bit of both - part covered and part not covered.

Couldn't have said it better myself :) I've had many Jewelry Babies pass through my hands, and it is indeed the tinsel that turns 'cottony'.

Oh, how I hate tinsel!

I'd get rid of it if I had time!

I second that! I really don't like tinsel in pony hair - it's always such a pain in the behind.

hathorcat- Then its as I suspected...quite cheap of Hasbro...should have known they would be Hasbroken even back then... -_-

I love tinsel....I never intended to pluck the tinsel itself, that would devalue the ponies... I just wanted to get rid of the cottony stuff, but I dunno if it would devalue them as well...and jewelry ponies are rare as they are.

Has anyone ever tried to retinsel one of these guys or found a tinsel that looks and feels similar?
I have seen a lot of cases where the pony hair is nice, but the tinsel is nasty!

Its a tough one to be honest. Because they are rare and hard to find ponies, its not quite the same as detinselling Princess Luna or Pinkie Pie and therefore I havent see anyone detinsel or replace directly tinsel. But no doubt someone has at some point. I would think the pony would need to be in pretty poor condition before you got someone willing to do it though. The vast majority of Jewellery Babies have this problem - therefore having some cottony tinsel is not massively devaluing in itself, it is a fault which when you purchase this set you have to expect. Therefore removing some strands, lots of strands or adding more tinsel to a pretty pricey pony could be something people do not wish to risk.

Ooo oo I have! It's actually called a Kreinik Metallics Blending Filament. It comes in small spools. It even has that extra little piece of cotton with the tinsel... It's the closest I've come across to being like original pony tinsel. For example, used it on Baby Punzie, it survives a curler:

This is really common with Jewellery babies unfortunately . I've retinselled ponies before but TBH you have to rehair the pony completely as far as i know to do it (which would not be a good idea with an otherwise good condition jewellery baby who only has a problem with her tinsel rather than her hair) :awake: . I dont think it devalues the pony much if her tinsel isnt perfect in this case, so i would leave it as it is rather than trying to take the tinsel out or retinsel/rehair the pony

I use very long beading needles when I hair ponies. I've been able to sneak in extra tinsel in adults; when I worked on the pony I pictured in my previous post I was able to add in more tinsel after she was haired using beading needle. Just a thought...

I have 2 MOC Jewelry Babies and you can see through the plastic that the cotton has already separated, so even if you get them moc and decard them yourself you will still have this problem. I also have them loose (they are my favs) and you can tame the tinsel quite nicely using a variety of the anti-frizzing techniques mentioned on the boards. I don't pull out the cotton strands because I am afraid some would break off and then stick up like twigs. I prefer to just make them cooperate :P
