« on: March 31, 2013, 08:36:47 AM »
i would like to hear some alternatives to dollyhair/other online bought hair. im rehairing my G1 Merry-go-round pony, Brilliant Blossoms and cant buy things online (too young for paypal and parent doesnt approve of ponies). it will be my first rehair and im a littler nervous...

i saw some yellow clip-on hair extensions in Kmart a while back. would they work?

The dollar stores usually have packs of hair or hair from a wig. It isn't as good quality but good practice hair.

You could try donor hair, from other My Little Ponies.  sd_Dreamcrystal posted a thread on using ribbon:

Hair extensions can work, although just be aware that the hair is often a coarser grade of hair than the nylon, saran, or doll-grade kanekalon that customizers like best.  Look for something that appears thin, flexible, and silky for best results.  I agree that dollar store hair is also okay--although again, it's harder to style.  Some people have used embroidery floss, or yarn that is brushed out to make pouffy hair, but it has the same disadvantage of ribbon hair in that it's not intended to be brushed.

It's lovely and comes in all kinds of colors and only $1! Though, I found out after rehairing it that it will be difficult to curl.  >_<   It's great for practice! One head band is more than enough for a single pony's mane and tail. I had a lot of hair left and used heavy hanks when rooting the pony. The hair is nice a sleek but again, it's going to be a pain in the butt to curl.

when i first started customizing *sounds like old woman with a cane 'back in my day'*
I used to use hair made from the nylon material in those colorful jump ropes (like at dollar store or walmart and the like)

*digs around in really old photos*

and made plugs....just like the "needle and thread" method like this
but i have also seen people use yarn with success.... and hair bought in beauty supply stores or wigs from the dollar store or halloween shop

good luck!

I've used the Dollar Tree hair before. It's not the best stuff, but it works fine for just hairing if you don't need an elaborate style.

I can braid the tail ( it sticks out like Pippy Long stocking's braids! lol ) but the mane is all kinds of crazy! I do agree, the DS hair is more for practice or really experienced people since it's hard to style.

Best way to describe my rehaired pony is "stiff" lol

A bit of heat from a blowdryer will help, Like A Tea Spoon, but be careful or you can melt the hair.

The ribbon can't be brushed easily but if you want a straight style it works, and it's actually fairly soft. I haven't tried using an iron on it yet to see if I can make it straighter though

I'll be seeing about posting a mini-guide at some point for alternate types of hair... just got to get the images and such together and the time after work x.x

Are you able to bank deposit instead if PayPal? I'll most likely be placing a dolly hair order in the next few weeks if you're not in a hurry, or may even have what you need.

i cant use any online shopping or banking. its extremely restricted till i turn 18 in december. i bought some stuff at Kmart and it seems to be working well. just a little bit dry. ill give it a good conditioning after im done rehairing. i also added some purple to the tail along with the original hair and that looks really good
