Laptop problem o.o
« on: April 02, 2013, 03:53:48 AM »
Okay so maybe some slightly more tech savvy ponies can help me. I am planning to head up to the 'local' computer shop this week and see if they can give me some insight.

I've had my current laptop since Christmas 11 and had very few problems. But over the last week I've noticed I think I may have a problem with the charger. I had this happen with my old laptop but when I got that laptop it was already about two years old, this one is fairly new.

It plugs into the wall, green light goes on but it doesn't seem to have any real issues supply wise. However when it's plugged it it keeps randomly disconnecting on me. I noticed it the first time when I was sitting on the sofa and it kept going 'ac/battery/ac/battery'

And right now it seems if I want to charge it I need to keep it on my desk and the charger pin that goes into the laptop I need to keep moving around or adjusting how much its pushed in so it will find a postion to charge. But now even when it's in the 'right' place it seems to randomly disconnect.

I'm hoping it's the charger that's the issue and not the laptop charging pin. If it's the charging pin I know that will be a more intensive thing to sort out. I did just touch part of the wire, the thick bit just under the pin case and it d/ced

Do you mean the charger or the laptop itself? It looks okay to me but then I admit I am not that tech minded so I can't tell.

I'm hoping so too if it's just a new charger than that's an easy thing, if it's the laptop itself not so much.

Well to further add to things I took the charger out and the end was really warm, I'm pretty sure that's not normal.

Judging by your description, it sounds like the plug that connects your power supply to your computer is bent or deformed and you are having contact issues.

I think you will just need a new power supply. You could bring in the laptop to the store you are going to and ask to try a new power supply out.

It probably won't be a problem with your computer unless you really managed to damage it or were rough with it.

That seems likely from what I read. The shop doesn't sell chargers they're more of a repairs place so going to them is for a second opinion type deal.

My oldest brother (who was the one who got me the laptop) has offered to pay for a new charger when I find one.

Sounds to me like you just need a new charger/cord. I had the same problem with my old laptop before I replaced the charger; I had to hold the cord in a special position and move it around to keep it connected. Hopefully it's not a bigger problem than that!

Sounds like there could be an issue with the cable of the charger, where it's either not quite making a proper connection anymore with the actual plug that goes into your laptop, or there's a break in the cable itself, so it will only charge when the 2 pieces of cable line up properly.

I hope a new charger fixes your problem.

Well it's charging okay at the moment but I'm keeping an eye on it.
I found a replacement so until it gets here I'm going to try and not drain my battery too much (which means no gaming for me!)

I had this issue recently.  Turns out the point where the cable attaches to the pin had some fraying.  Bought a new charger and everything is fine.  :)

Yup, sounds like cable issues to me. Maybe one of your friends has a laptop of a same manufacturer, you could try their charger to see if the problem is in the charger (cable) or in the computer itself (attachment).  :)

yeah I had a similar problem when I tripped on my plugged in charger (oops)when I got up to grab the phone in a hurry. Was luckily just the charger that needed replacing, so hopefully it's the same for you.

Well I found a replacement,  so I'm just waiting on it to be ordered for me and to get here.

I think I did manage to accidently trip over my cable a little while ago so maybe that was it.
I've had it on charge a couple of times and it seems to be working okay but I know I need to be careful with it.

It sounds like the plastic inside the jack on the laptop could be cracked, making it so it doesn't hold the plug in tight enough to maintain contact.  It happened to a friend of mine's a couple years ago.  She had to take it in and get the jack replaced.  It wasn't cheap.
