And yes its to do with licensing. Hasbro still have the rights to license any generation image - G1 to G4. Buying licenses and rights for earlier generations tends to be much much cheaper than licensing rights for current brands which the manufacturer is supporting through its own lines. So its a way for companies to be part of the MLP line without paying the high licence prices.
