Wig making experiment (in progress)
« on: March 11, 2013, 01:52:04 AM »
Due to a need for more wigs for my CAM dolls and a lack of variety of wigs for them, I started looking into ways to make wigs.  And I wanted something that would be fairly quick to put together.  So, after finding this tutorial for sewing hair wefts:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=wrqgEr_C-kE

and this tutorial for making a doll wig using hair wefts:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=A4gjFdCG4N0

I decided to give it a go using similar techniques.  I made a fabric wig cap to go over the plastic wrap and I'm using Fabritac instead of hot glue.  The hair is from Dollar Tree, I wanted something cheap to work with in case I messed it all up.

First I sewed the hair wefts.  Then I cut the ribbon strip of the weft down the middle; this is one half of it.  That's done a little differently than in the video.  I thought doubling it up would make the hair too bulky.

Now I'm working on gluing the wefts around the wig cap.  I'll also be gluing the fabric down in places or just cutting off the excess so that it's not poking out and gives a more snug fit.  If the Fabritac sticks to the plastic wrap, I may just skip making a fabric cap next time.  Or else go ahead and use low-temp hot glue instead of Fabritac.  I'm not crazy how the wig cap turned out.

Looking good so far! I'm excited to see how it turns out! I also tried this method, but the wig cap bugged me so much! I'm super happy that you showed us how to make wefts. That is great info!

Can't wait to see more!  I love to switch wigs and can never seem to find enough options.

Thanks!  I'm really really hoping this turns out well, I've got so many ideas for custom wigs, but it'd take forever to make them by rooting wig caps, I just don't have the patience.  It's weird, but when the CAMs first came out, I was not crazy about the wigs at all, I wanted them to have rooted hair, lol.  But now...I LOVE the wigs and the versatility.  It's so much fun.  The CAM sets are like doll legos.

Very pretty! I love the color blend!

I've been thinking of trying to modify the horrible harpy wig somehow. It's already so terrible looking I don't think I could mess it up. I might add more purple or red streaks to it. This thread inspires me to give it a shot!

This looks promising. Did you happen to have taken the hair from the blue midnight magic doll? I was thinking of trying to make a wig from her hair, because it is so long.

If you do, I'd love to see pics!!

The hair came from a sort of headband that had the hair hanging down from it.  I got them at Dollar Tree some time ago, so I'm not sure if they'd still have something like it.  I've thought of getting the blue Midnight Magic doll just because of that glorious hair.
